Do You Expect a Let Down?

Do you expect to be let down by Tennessee's coaching hire?

I would not be surprised to hear Dave Hart announce: "to get the football program back to where it needs to be we have decided to make al golden/charlie strong the highest paid football coach in the NCAA."

I heard that exact thing....in last night's nightmare of a dream...gotta lay off the pasta late at night.

I am actually optimistic that big money will prevail. Here's why:

I am guessing based on announced attendance numbers this year that there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 80,000 tickets that did not get sold.

So if you go with $40 a ticket, that's $3.2 million. Add additional concessions, parking charges, donations associated with season ticket purchases and other misc. incomes, and it's not unreasonable to think that the university left well over $4 million on the table this year alone.

The apathy with the football program is, by far, at an all-time high that I can recall in my 40+ year life time, and there is no reason to think that will change unless a hire is made that sparks interest.

It is possible, even likely, that there is an unknown coach out there who is very capable of building the program back to the level of excellence that fans expect. But, we all know that is going to take 3-5 years, and until then, the apathy would continue. Based on the math above, I don't think the powers that be are willing to leave that $20 million unclaimed even if they have to share a chunk of it with someone like John Gruden or another household name.

I voted yes, my hopes are high on Gruden, but I haven't seen anything good done by the AD or UT money in the past 10 years aside from some new facilities. This is the precipice of UT football and coincidentally the University. Hope we don't crash and burn.

I hope not but after the past few years I kind of expect a let down... so many "inside sources" say we are going to get this person or that person.. sort of a let down already.

After DP reported that it was GRUDEN who contacted UT not us contacting him, I now believe Hart is going to give us a major letdown with this hire. And now that GRUDEN is out of the picture his people leaked this info to DP.

So basically, because Mike Hamilton failed, Hart will also fail. After all, the "UT administration" is its own sentient being, or something.

I'd like to hear a legitimate (as in tangible evidence) argument if you're going to say yes.

Not necessarily, but just look at the history before Hamilton got there. Never really had a big hire at UT. Maybe you can argue Johnny Majors...

And regardless, Hamilton had more financial resources than Hart does now and was presumably turned down by a lot of good coaches (hence why we hired Dooley). Sure booster money is involved, but it still makes it a battle. Additionally, it looks like Hart just started the search.

Not saying that we can't have a great hire at all, but we have a lot of factors working against us: financially in bad shape, no recruiting base, sky high fan expectations, impatient fans (justifiably), and tons of opening at other schools (with many of them able to match or exceed UT with money, see Arkansas & Auburn). Everyone should keep this in mind before thinking a big splash hire is inevitable - it is unlikely unless there is a ridiculous offer or the person just absolutely loves the University of Tennessee.

UT has made it clear that money is no obstacle in this coaching research. That renders, well, everything you said irrelevant.
