That's apparently what Basillo is reporting. I don't care how inaccurate Basillo is, it's an interesting question.

10 years is a long time to be committed to paying out 5/yr

I personally would be a fan of a longer contract, assuming the coach was a proven commodity like Gruden. I'd love a contract that would essentially make Tennessee fans shut-up and swallow what happens the next 5-7 years with the same head coach so we can finally have some stability.

Honestly, I take Gruden at any price. Any price they can conceivably afford, you do it. If they need to raise my season tickets a hundred bucks a piece to make it happen, then do it. I'll gladly pay it for Gruden.

edit:...and actually, looking at that number, it's rather low. Saban already makes 6 million a year, and college coaching salaries are only going to grow the next few years. Why would Gruden want such a long deal, considering that he'll always have other offers anyway? And why would he want to lock himself in to an average of 5 million a year, when he already makes nearly that in his cushy TV job, and would probably make more than that anytime he wanted to go back to the NFL? Seems kind of like a lowball offer, to be honest. If you want Gruden, I would think you would have to pay more than that. Of course, Gruden would pay for himself, many times over, in the long run, anyway.

We probably couldn't sign him for less than that, and I'm fine with it. I think it's an investment that will pay immediate dividends for the program and the University. Tickets, concessions, and merchandise sales would receive a HUGE boost if we hired Gruden.

Exactly not to mention the wins and recruiting classes that would follow. The university couldn't lose

You get what you pay for!!! Even before Gruden coaches his first game the University will receive millions in donations that wouldnt have been there otherwise.

I think people need to take a step back, breathe a little, and ask when gruden became god's gift to coaching.

Tennessee needs to get the best coach they can, not the coolest name out there

Considering the last 10 years(football) ran us about 63 million dollars for coaches, assistants, and buyouts, I think 90 million dollars over the next 10 years for a superstar staff with Gruden seems reasonable. We are paying right at 5 million a year for coaches now. 9 million/yr is a pretty big increase and would make our staff the highest paid in college football.

I would like to know what his buyout would be(to UT) IF he left UT before the contract was up.

Okay, gator fan, I'll bite. Name me a better coach that we could conceivably get.

Definitely. You have a great X's and O's coach who is one of the nicest most charismatic people on the planet. He can get recruits here with his charisma and coach them up well when he's screaming their heads off because of his shall we say "saban-esque" intensity.

Since I don't actually have to write the check, heck yeah! If it takes 10mil a year I don't care if it's a Thunder or Haslam that foots the bill lol.

I'm not a big believer in hiring a pro coach.

Heck, if you are going to throw that kind of coin at someone, you could steal a number of successful college coaches away

I think Gruden is probably the best coach we can get. The guy is a student of the game and I can guarantee will get recruits here. I'm going to assume you're not trying to troll and are wanting an actual explanation.

5 million a year is not the most ridiculous number to throw out there. Saban makes more and rightfully so. Gruden has proven himself at the NFL level and has studied the game at the college level. I'm wondering what your concerns would be with him if you actually have any.

Super Bowl (2-time) coaches are a dime a dozen.

Flame me if you want. I have to agree with Mr. Gator on this one.
Gruden is not coming to UT. Why would he. He can make the same amount of money, if not more in the NFL with half the work.

Weigh out the pros and cons if you were in the same postion as Gruden.

We will be lucky to land Patterson or Strong.

Just keeping it real.

P.S.
I will run through my neighborhood buck naked if I'm wrong!!

GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

A couple of concerns.

1. He never developed any young talent. So, I don't know how good he is with young players.

2. He is a pro guy and the games are different
