Nope, if he dont get it done next year, he should be fired. Dooley 2.0 in my opinion..
When Golden played badly, we were nearly assured of losing. And, we were not good in the games he missed, like that ugly home blowout loss to UGA. We don't have an experienced true PG to replace him. So, until the team proves otherwise, I don't see how we can be expected to be better without him. If someone seizes the opportunity and plays well at PG, I'll change my opinion.
You guys are brutal.
A little historical perspective would remind everyone that Tennessee basketball has not been a consistent NCAA tournament team over the years. We had a nice run with Pearl, but the way his tenure ended actually set us back a little ... and expectations for Cuonzo (IMO) have been a little ridiculous.
I see this year as his first year to really show us what he can do, but in NO way do I consider it a "do or die" year for Cuonzo. He would have to lay a great big turd for me to be ready to see him fired.
Let's look at this objectively. To last year's "middling" team we add Maymon (who may or may not be 100%) and Hubbs (a freshman with a lot of hype ... do our big recruits ever really meet expectations?). AND we lose Golden, our starting (and only) point guard. Those making Elite 8 reservations should contact me about oceanfront property in Arizona.
If I had one criticism of Cuonzo, it would be in talent evaluation and recruiting. But again, we need to see what happens with this class and next year's class to really get a good indication of where we're heading.
they made the tourney every year under green and pearl. take out a terrible coach in peterson, and i bet UT could have made the tourney nearly the entire decade.
Jerry Green and Bruce Pearl started out with much better rosters. It's not even close.
Jerry Green had Tony Harris, Vincent Yarborough, CJ Black, etc.
Bruce Pearl inherited arguably the best shooter in NCAA history and a future NBA point guard.
That said, it's time to make the dance for Martin.
