Why is everyone banging him out because Gruden wasn't interested and you guys all got your hopes up on someone who was a pipe dream.

Can he be allowed to have a chance at making the right hire? Jesus, he inherited a mess. Kiffin wasn't his choice and either was Dooley, we can't keep continuing to hold Hamiltons mistakes over his head.

Give the dude a chance, if not...everyone should apply to be the next AD at UT

If Dave Hart seriously just contacted Gruden's agent today amidst the ridiculous amount of Gruden talk going on amongst Vols fans, he's dumber than I thought.

How many times did we talk about the runaway train that he never bothered to stop?

When you're throwing out names like Golden, Jones, Strong, Fedora, Fisher, etc you deserve to be bashed.

Why the crap must Dave Hart play to every ridiculous and naive notion or movement that pops up on Volnation from crazy fans? He did not miss on Gruden or screw it up at all. Gruden had NO INTEREST AT ALL!!!

You have no idea what's really going on behind the scenes. People need to stop bashing Hart for things they perceive to be true when in reality they have no clue. Just let the process play out. If Hart comes up with a "Dooley" type hire then he's fair game but until there is an actual hire people need to chill.

That's because that "just talked to him this morning" stuff could be bullsh!t. Both sides save face this way. UT doesn't look bad for screwing yet another pooch in the coaching search game, and Gruden doesn't come off looking like an over-demanding attention whore. Sucks he won't be coming though.

What I do know is that Dave Hart has been mum about Gruden even though seemingly half of his fan base (very vocally) expected to see Jon as the next head coach.

If it was never in the cards, get out in front of the situation before you allow false expectations to be created.

He's going to be crucified by the fans, and I don't think I'll feel bad about it.

For the last 10 days it was shoe-in we were getting Gruden on here as well. One of the many "inside" sources must have given him the list

Exactly! They will probably say: cowher, Dungy, Lovie Smith. Etc... All coaches who would laugh if we came to them and asked about the job. From the beginning our only chances are strong, petrino, fedora, mora jr, Patterson, maybe Grundy and stoops (at least call them). All of those are good coaches and tons better than what we had. Yet people got all worked up with Gruden and now nothing else will do. I wanted Gruden too but doubted it would happen. Move on and support whoever we hire! It's all we can do

So because of a message board created an unrealistic candidate (Jon Gruden) now the AD is doing a poor job at his role for the university???

How dare he focus on trying to find a realisitc candidate and interview people actually wanting to be the next head coach at UT

Not if, but when. He will get some 2nd rate coach just to prove that he can do what he wants.

It's not in Hart's job description to appease delirious segments of the fanbase. Rest assured he is not spending his time on VolNation, and thank God for that.

Props to the OP who has a good head on his shoulders. It's time for everyone one else to get over it. Just be happy Hart even bothered to contact Gruden when he knew he would be turned down.

They are they only ones that make me feel confident in turning this **** around and uniting the fan base. The tier B guys do nothing for me and will not support any one not named Gruden, Patterson, Petersen, or Stoops.

I'm not saying it's necessarily rational, but facts are facts. The cliff notes thread at VolNation has over a million views. People have been paying attention and anticipation has been building to a crescendo.

There are a lot of pissed off fans out there right now. Thought that was pretty obvious.

Yep that's right. He's going to hire a second rate coach while all the top coaches are begging us to hire them. It's only because he wants to prove to everyone he can do what he wants.

Because surely Hart isn't deaf to the talk that's been circulating in Knoxville over the past month or so. If he had no interest in pursuing Gruden, or Gruden was never interested, why not just come out and say so before things got so out of control? Instead, it kind of feel like the AD led the fans on for a while only to then force them to stomach a FAR inferior hire. Every other SEC school that is in the market for a coach has at least laid out some candidates that they are interested in.

Hart talked a big game in his press conference about not letting money be an object in this hire, but if we were always going to get stuck with a Butch Jones/Larry Fedora type hire, why not just be upfront about it so fans could prepare for the worst rather than hoping for the best like we've been allowed to do the past few weeks?

Lets try to use our brains everyone. If Hart just contacted Gruden in the past couple of days then there was still a chance (however slight it may be) that he would be interested back when all the "OGs" started popping up. Hart wasn't getting your hopes up so he could crush them. He just simply hadn't talked to Gruden yet.

Even if Hart had made an announcement about it weeks ago everyone would have made the smoke screen argument anyway.
