Does Jalen Hurd Seem a Bit Too Tall For a Tailback?

I don't care what position he ends up playing (and I do believe it will be RB) the only thing that matters to me right now is that he will be wearing orange next year. The kid is a beast.

ESPN has him listed at 6-4. I'm trying to think of an elite tailback who was that tall and I'm drawing a blank. I'm not saying that an elite 6-4 tailback is outside the realm of possibility, but I definitely think there's a reason the average height of running backs in the NFL is 5-9; namely, a lower center of gravity allows for quicker changes in direction, which is something running backs have to do.

The tallest elite running back I can come up with is Eric Dickerson, who is 6-3. So it isn't impossible, but he's definitely the exception. And he was also just a uniquely talented player.

Am I overthinking this? Is Hurd definitely going to be a stud?

I don't care how tall he is if he can run the ball. He isn't those other RBs. He's Jalen Hurd.

It's nice to have a RB commit that height is the only thing people are worried about keeping him from being a great SEC back. GbO!

I'm not worried about him being an awesome RB.

I'm worried about his knees getting token out like Marcus L. did when he played us.

Height has nothing to do with playing RB it all comes down to pad leverage.

It is very tall for a running back. We all hope Hurd is great, but there are considerations. Unless you are a real beast, it is harder to get pad leverage and break tackles and go forward after contact because of your higher center of gravity--it is easier to hit a tall guy in the midsection and stop him cold then it is to hit a short guy in the midsection and stop. Also, and don't underestimate this, tall backs are easier to see whereas shorter back can get lost behind offensive linemen and squirt through holes--see Emmitt Smith of the Cowboys. We all hope for great.

Please see '14 TN RB Jalen Hurd (UT commit 3/14/13) pages 1-357...

That's probably 75% of all discussion in his thread. There was a good month when the only thing that was mentioned was Hurd's height and cargo shorts :)

Hopefully he can end up with a Heisman like Eddie George. Would mean he came in and kicked the teeth in of the rest of the SEC!

As long as he doesn't get stuffed at the goal line post Heisman trophy ceremony......

what's the difference in handing the ball off to a 6'-4" player and throwing to a 6'-4" player?

put him in the backfield and let him carry the mail!

6 foot 6 is his cut off if it keeps growing and goes over 6foot 6 his scholarship automatically transfers to the basketball program. So it's win win for Tennessee.
