It’s NBA or he’s staying. The people who think he is transferring are just throwing crap against the wall to see if it sticks. Barnes has praised Phillips and the way he practices, Phillips is ELITE defensively and the numbers show that, and he gets A LOT of playing time. There’s no reason whatsoever for him to transfer from such a good program who is probably in the tourney again next season. Also, where he will most likely be the star go to guy.
Logically you are 100% correct but unfortunately many of these 5 star types have outside influencers in their ears telling them their struggles were the coach’s fault like BHH. Who knows what any player will do in today’s portal world, especially one who expected to be as productive as Brandon Miller.

We see how much BHH improved I actually watched a few of his games his out put wasn't much better than here

It’s actually better, his best yet and maybe the best class ever of any school.
Yeah on paper. But John Wall and Demarcus Cousins type players in same class same team are rare. Will be interesting if this class can approach or surpass that. If so they will be in a whole different stratosphere than everyone else.

Where?

I don’t think he wants a situation where he is the top dog. Doesn’t seem to fit his personality.

So then go somewhere with other top players and risk getting lost in the shuffle there?
There’s 352 div 1 schools. I’m sure he could find somewhere if he really wanted to.

Don’t know where but I don’t think he is happy.
I mean, yeah, I’d hope he’s not happy, but I don’t think he got much of anyone to blame but himself. He’s been given ample playing time and opportunity. He’s just not very good, yet, on a consistent basis. He needs a lot of work. He wasn’t going to be a freshman all-American no matter where he went in the SEC, most likely, because the issues holding him back are physical and skill-related. Our offense isn’t pretty, but we are desperate for someone to step up and be the offensive alpha. If he can’t step up in this offense, then it isn’t the system’s fault. We are practically begging for someone to be the man.

It looked like he was about to have a Sports Center highlight drive to the basket last night. But then he ran over the defender for a charge instead of finishing. You could see the extraordinary talent level flash - just not quite there yet at this level of ball.

He should really come back. He makes a lot of mistakes when he is on the floor which tells me he needs to hone his BB IQ.

Anywhere he goes, he still has a ton to get better at. His problem isn’t a system problem as some have acted like. It’s a physical ball handling problem. At this point in time he is not a reliable at taking it to the rim or a very good handler or passer of the basketball. His potential is high but right now he isn’t putting it together. I hope the light comes on but I can’t figure out right now why he seems to be struggling so bad catching and handling the ball. And also learning to play under control, he really seems to struggle when players get physical with him.

He doesn't look like the same player IMO.

He was looking more comfortable a few months ago than he is now. I just wish he would bring more tenacity to the floor, he needs to look for his shot more. Needs some confidence. The team as a whole needs to shoot and play with more aggressiveness and confidence. We are capable of getting hot and we are way overdue. Time to go on a run and put the full choke on D!!!!! GBO

Well, the competition is a wee bit better in the SEC, and he's playing against some grown men, now, not some undersized HS kids like himself.
True, but in those clips, he was decisive, aggressive and sure. Right now he looks lost and uncertain of his role and what to do. Like you and others have pointed out, he's a freshman and it's a huge step up. Points well taken, but at this point, he's not a "freshman" anymore. Would have expected things to slow down for him by now. He's just different to my eye. Maybe I'm putting 5 star expectations on him because of what I see Miller doing and I remember how Chandler looked as the year progressed? Dunno, but I hope we get the chance to see him get his swagger back wearing orange. Kid might flourish in the NBA developmental programs, but if this jump has gotten into his head, the next one...well...he's clearly not ready for that move.

He shows flashes in every game, but he really needs another year at this level even if it primarily to build up his confidence.

The turnovers he had in the last game were close to mindboggling.

Well, if I'm being fair, he is a true freshman. I've been in a lot of locker rooms and it's really hard for an 18 year old to come in and take a strong role on a veteran laden team. Usually, the kid will always defer to the upperclassmen. I suspect/hope that we see a far different version of Phillips next season if he hangs around.

If Phillips is indeed a Vols one and done we were all hoping that meant a NBA lottery pick not a transfer

Someone mentioned the contrast between Phillips and Miller at Alabama. Spot on and worlds apart

Stick around, young man!

Be the Vols alpha--a Vol legend next year--with a young emerging cast of Awaka/Aidoo, Dilione, a shocking return of JJJ, plus the (hopefully) unexpectedly good three-headed guard play from Mashack, BJ, and DJ.

So so so much length and athleticism in that rotation
