does Martin talk to the student body any?

It still gripes me. He should have (a) been in Knoxville hosting unofficial visits and/or elite camps - lots of kids were going to campuses to firm up their official visit lists or (b) taken his players on that Italy trip to give his UT players more games and practice time on his "system". Either would have been more productive than coaching other school's kids in the World University Games.

I'm still not sure how you take a job that's a a million dollar raise, huge step up in responsibility and exposure and - after three months on that new job, take a month off.
What about going to China? Is that part of his job?

Apparently he has plenty of time to do that.

Remember when Pearl spent half the summer evaluation period overseas coaching in the Macaroni Games? I'm guessing you don't.

That started the whole downhill slide as it prompted him to try to jam two summers of recruiting into one, leading to the juniors at the barbecue.

this guy seems non existent when it comes to marketing this years vols with the student body and with the regular fans. Is this how most coaches act towards the student body? with bp being the exception?

sorry, thought i was in the basketball forum.

Go look at the thread "why TBA is so silent or quiet". I made the argument that Martin isn't helping himself any with the fan base by not marketing his team. For six years we got accustomed to a coach being around students constantly(please no Sandusky jokes lol) and when Bruce was let go students were expecting what they got for six years from th incoming coach. Being accustomed to somethin for six years then having something new is fonna take time to get used too. It's even more difficult to get used to when you had a coach who would meet and greet with students a lot to going to none. I'm sure that has to be a little bit of the reason students haven't turned out as much as expected

It seems you're fighting a losing battle with students anyway, as the student body seems increasingly uninterested in sports (even under Pearl student attendance wasn't always great).

But yes, you've got to make basketball an event in Knoxville to bring people out, and thus far Martin's program is doing very little to move the interest meter.

I know the team is very limited, but we were lead to believe that players would at least play hard nose defense, and we're not even seeing that.

Why don't the players get up and ask the students to come support their team ? Is that wrong ? But I do agree though that CM needs to get out in public more and sell his team to the fans.

I just don't hear or see any sense of urgency with CM. When ever I hear him talk, seems like he says he likes the progress he sees and it's not about the wins and losses right now.I just don't think that's going to cut it as things stand right now.

Almost any coach would pale in comparison to BP when it comes to ‘public relations’ however Martin appears to have neither ability nor interest.

Martin is severely lacking in this as well as other professional skills required of a leader of the university

I can understand the discomfort if you’re not inclined but this position requires him to do a certain amount of it….I would hope there’s a plan in place to help him find his ‘niche’…

If I recall correctly when Bob Kessling took his position one of his duties was going to be to work with student athletes to improve their communication skills…maybe he could be of some help….:)
