*Kids that are really good don't........Kids in the portal don’t change schools to be a 3 year backup
This kid, for one, left TN with a pretty decent NIL deal. I'm not sure if he was pushed out or left for UNLV, but he's walking on (or was) at Louisville.Usually not but one or two might for some decent NIL money. What 20-year-old would turn down maybe $50-75K to practice and stand on the sideline during games? While still in college?
IMO that's not the approach. If you're a 5th or 6th year grad player and you look and say OK Nico is the assumed starter but that's no guarantee that he will be good enough and certainly no guarantee that he will not get seriously injured and then I'm competing against a true freshman for the starting job the rest of the season. I guarantee we can find a QB with that mentality. They’re not transferring to sit on the bench
Sure thing. Who you gonna get to come sit behind Nico from the portal? So next year Nico is the starter, but what happens if he is less than advertised? Or worse if he gets seriously injured? Is our backup going to be true freshman Merklinger?
Do we need to grab a JR or SR transfer QB just as a safety net in case the worst happens or do we just ride on the rims with Merklinger?
Unless we're throwing way better NIL at them, why would they leave their current situation?IMO that's not the approach. We don't need a prima donna young kid who took his ball and left because he didn't want to sit behind and older player. We need an experienced guy who is "good enough" in case the worst happens. Someone with only 1 year of eligibility left who maybe started at other power 5 programs but is not NFL talent.

I'm sure that's next. Mid Season transfers ( free agent) pickups.. immediately eligible for play.Is it not possible to get another qb mid season if Nico gets injured and our back ups flop ? Since we are making college football like the pro's, why not go after a Joe Flaco like Cleveland did when Burrow got hurt ?
