Does Tennessee need a portal QB?

Kids in the portal don’t change schools to be a 3 year backup
*Kids that are really good don't........

Gaston Moore did exactly that. Serviceable QB, not going to win games for you, but going to manage the game to the best of his talent if he gets in the game.

There's a market for Josh Dobbs in the NFL.
There's a market for Gaston Moore in college.

Usually not but one or two might for some decent NIL money. What 20-year-old would turn down maybe $50-75K to practice and stand on the sideline during games? While still in college?
This kid, for one, left TN with a pretty decent NIL deal. I'm not sure if he was pushed out or left for UNLV, but he's walking on (or was) at Louisville.

Check that NIL worth now as a walk on.

They’re not transferring to sit on the bench
IMO that's not the approach. If you're a 5th or 6th year grad player and you look and say OK Nico is the assumed starter but that's no guarantee that he will be good enough and certainly no guarantee that he will not get seriously injured and then I'm competing against a true freshman for the starting job the rest of the season. I guarantee we can find a QB with that mentality.

We don't need a prima donna young kid who took his ball and left because he didn't want to sit behind and older player. We need an experienced guy who is "good enough" in case the worst happens. Someone with only 1 year of eligibility left who maybe started at other power 5 programs but is not NFL talent.

So next year Nico is the starter, but what happens if he is less than advertised? Or worse if he gets seriously injured? Is our backup going to be true freshman Merklinger?

Do we need to grab a JR or SR transfer QB just as a safety net in case the worst happens or do we just ride on the rims with Merklinger?
Sure thing. Who you gonna get to come sit behind Nico from the portal?

Unless we're throwing way better NIL at them, why would they leave their current situation?

Even if they drop up to backup at somewhere like Arkansas, it's a sure thing, a system they know, an area they know, etc....... where they used to be a starter.

If you're going to sit, why not sit where you might be looked at as someone who can "help the new guy because you've been there" instead of being the new guy.

Doesn’t really matter if we need one or not. This staff isn’t really strong at recruiting.

If we go into next season with a significantly better OL, particularly in pass pro, I'll worry alot less about the backup QB

How the CFP treated us in 2022 and FSU in 2023 shows that if you aren't a media darling, you must have a bonafide backup QB if you want to be in the playoffs.

Why would a junior or senior enter the transfer portal? Typically the answer is to be the starter. Not sure anyone is looking to be the backup

And how did the CFP treat us? After that meltdown in SC they were fortunate to get a New Year bowl.

Will the Vols sign a second QB in this class?

Hopeful that MerkSlinger will be the next great behind Nico. Just seems like they need more QBs in the war room.....

Is it not possible to get another qb mid season if Nico gets injured and our back ups flop ? Since we are making college football like the pro's, why not go after a Joe Flaco like Cleveland did when Burrow got hurt ?

I'm sure that's next. Mid Season transfers ( free agent) pickups.. immediately eligible for play.
