Does the Sugar Bowl have any freedom of action?

Good question by OP tho... if the Rose Bowl would have the freedom to bypass Ohio State and select Penn State, why wouldn't the Sugar Bowl have the freedom to bypass Alabama and select Tennessee?

Because they don't. The Rose Bowl has no such contractual requirement. The Sugar is contractually bound to take the SEC champ if not in the playoffs, or if they are, the highest CFP ranked SEC team not in the playoffs. The Rose is contratually bound to take the Pac-12 and Big10 champs if not in the playoffs, but are free to take any other Pac-12 and Big10 team if they are not. Although I have every expectation that they would invite OH St over Penn St, they don't have to.

UGA is in no matter what. If they lose to LSU I'm guessing they only drop to #3. USC remains #4. OSU #5.

The only remaining game that affects the who is in the Top 4 is the PAC 12 Championship.

True, but if LSU were to somehow find a way to beat GA the Sugar HAS to take them. Bama would then likely go to the Orange, and we would either go to the Cotton or the Citrus, depending on how the rest of the games shake out.

Correct UGA is in no matter what but if LSU wins that pushes LSU all the way up from the citrus bowl to the sugar bowl.

Then if OSU successfully politics their way out of the rose bowl (assuming USC And TCU win) then Penn State to the rose bowl, Ohio State to the orange bowl and bama to the cotton bowl. That would drop us to the citrus bowl and it would probably be against Purdue ...

This ^ I can’t imagine the Rose Bowl not making sure that they had some wiggle room before signing a contract. No sane Bowl would not have insisted on some clause to protect them from a multi million dollar decision left in the sole hands of an unaccountable committee

This ^ The Rose Bowl did do that - the Sugar Bowl did not.

I agree with you that it makes me mad. I also don't think we beat Bama again without Hooker. Bottom line is if the Vols take care of business in Columbia, then we are #5 looking in and cheering for TCU/USC to lose. So i agree with cavput, we get what we earned.

If we had beaten SC, we'd be sitting at 3 or 4.

I can imagine they could make their preference known to the committee if they’d want one team ranked higher than the other. Say if they were ranked 6/7, and the bowl wanted the order reversed.

I predict that it will “magically” work out to where Vols are in the Sugar Bowl.

We beat Bama head to head.
We beat LSU, who beat Bama.
We beat Vandy by a larger margin than Bama.

We have a better point differential than Bama in: all games, SEC games, and in ranked games (we also played one more ranked opponent than Bama).

If the committee is really going to look at the complete body of work, then the South Carolina loss shouldn't matter because the rest of our performances made up for it in point differential. They're incredibly inconsistent with their criteria and what exactly goes into this. So dumb.

Does AD White have any ability to sway the Sugar Bowl decision making and have them pick Tennessee over the Alabama team they defeated head to head? Does VolTwitter have any usefulness here? What are the strategic options over the remaining five days before Bowl picks go out? I am not giving up yet! We deserve Sugar here
We shouldn't want the Sugar Bowl.

The Orange Bowl is better in every single way.

We all know it's not that they're inconsistent. It's they want that script A in the playoff so badly.

If it were any team other than Alabama we’d be 6 and they’d be 7.

Except for the FOOOOOD. We’re are talking NOLA cuisine people. Vs the place responsible for the bland and soulless “South Beach Diet”. Boudin or Kale???? Jambalaya vs tofu? Which will it be for us the fans?

What ability would White have to dictate which team a bowl selects? If there are rules saying they take the highest ranked SEC team not in the playoffs, that's the rule. I'd love the Sugar bowl and being the lead in to the playoffs, but we didn't take care of business. And to be perfectly honest, if I'm comparing bama and UT at this moment, I'm seeing bama with Young in a far more favorable light than UT with Milton. We aren't the same high octane offense we were with Hooker. If he were still playing, our "fun factor" would still be sky high. Now....not so much. We are a shell of what we were earlier this season. Stinks, but that's life. You accept it as being what you have earned and deserve based on your play. Bama might have some losses but they're nowhere near as bad/inept as ours vs UGA and SCjr. Those were flat out ugly. No, UT had a great year by our standards, but we're not nearly at the level some of our fans think we are.

We can have nice things, its allowed.

We have a good history, rising program and team.

This was explained in another thread but summary, the Sugar is tied in to take the 2nd best team in SEC. Is that based on ranking or subjective? If its ranking then Bama is in, if not guess its open. The Orange against Clemson would not be a let down from the Sugar against K. State. I would take the Orange.

2nd best team in the SEC ranking is Vols right?

White may have a no oomph in such as case. BUT, I think Fulmer managed to get KY bumped from a bowl, and we replaced them. My memory is vague on it, but pretty sure he pulled that off.

From the SEC page, things seem to be weird but bound by contracts. As usual, ESPN is probably neck deep in selection "exceptions" but the SEC lays out how it's supposed to work.

Ok. You're right. But I'd still prefer the Orange Bowl.

It’s based on CFP ranking, contractually.
