Does tonight translate to SEC games?

Mizzou struggled more with an FCS team than UT did with a potential MWC champ.

They couldn't stop a VERY slow team. They hit some big plays but struggled to sustain anything. Unless they improve dramatically (and I'm talking finding someone with talent)... they're going to fall hard. They play Toledo and UCF next... and could lose them both.

Agreed.

Mauk and Mizzou were very...meh.

I think USC, UK, Vandy and Mizzou are all wins at this point.

We can play with Ole Miss. Toss up there.

Haven't seen the Gators.

OU, UGA and UA are still losses at this point. But like you said...Richt.

UA loses 3 or 4 this year. Right NOW, one of those losses will not be to us unfortunately.

Last year USU was capable of beating the bottom half of the SEC. They lost key members on the lines, but still, they should have been a notch higher than the Cincy and NCstate teams we beat. Respectable opponent we just smeared like an ant.

Here's one item no one has mentioned. We shut down Keeton! Harrased him all damn night. Name the last time we stopped a mobile QB? It'll be a minute.

To be fair we never really made an effort to run or go outside of vvanilla . Oklahoma is the game that tells
I was really wanting to see Hurd carry a couple to the outside. I wanted to see that speed, and his capabilities with a little open space.

Yes - they were actually out gained in their first game I believe - kind of reminded me of Clemson without Sammy Watkins - Vandy without Matthews, etc. I really like our chances against them this year and I do think they take a big step backward.

Well in the aspect that every expert and Vegas odds gurus had us on the ropes and fighting for our lives...yes. In the aspect that this match up was similar IMHO to Ole Miss vs. Boise State....yes. In the aspect our defense just curb stomped the Chuckie Keeton's Heisman campaign which was supposed to carve our defense apart...yes. Are they an SEC team? No. Do they have SEC level talent? In spots. We destroyed a bowl winning team from a year ago...unlike Ole Miss that let Boise State hang around forever in their match up.

I believe it may have been his lowest total O performance of his career except for the game he was injured last year.... including the fact that he stayed in during junk time and picked up a couple of his better completions.

How'd Mizzou get on this site tonight? Oh, let me guess.
The D's speed and athleticism is even better than most expected. The O line just needs to gel a bit (a lot), but game films are going to reveal plenty and let's expect notable improvement from week to week. With all these new future stars...and that's not an exaggeration...these guys are going to be fun to watch. Hey! recruits! Wanna' have some fun? Wear the orange!

Just curious if people think this game meant as much as say NC state or Cincy or about the same. I think defensively it was our best opener against a good opponent in a long damn time.

I remember being thoroughly impressed with the defense in the NC State game minus the 4th down conversions they kept giving up. They ball hawked all night and even though they gave up some points they looked like they were going to be a pretty formidable defense. We all know how that turned out. I never really bought into the USU hype and all the Chuckie Keeton for Heisman crap but at the same time I gotta believe that the USU offense and Keeton have to be at least decent to have generated such a buzz.So I believe the defense is definitely a lot better than it was.Faster without a doubt.Whether or not it will be enough to keep our Vols competitive against the big dogs remains to be seen. I do believe that they are much better and it will continue to be apparent throughout the season......even in the games we lose.

Awful? No.

They are YOUNG and this was their first start TOGETHER. Give them time.

If you can't average 4 yards a pop against Utah State, there are issues. Did USU stuff the box? Yes. But they usually only put six or seven in and we almost always had a TE blocking.

Can they get better? Sure. But they were stil bad tonight.

Yessir........I was very pleased to hear so many of the new guys' names called tonight after making plays and not catastrophic mistakes. I am impressed with Butch, and I am starting to actually believe he might get us back to the top, instead of just telling myself that because I want it to happen so badly.

Offensively, our strength looks to be our receiving corp., which is talented though still young/very young. We threw a TON of bubble/slip screens tonight, and had success with them. But as I and others have said, we'll have trouble being as successful with them against SEC teams. We need to keep finding creative ways to get the ball to Howard, North and Pearson--and get it to them in space so they can run after catch. We ought to throw more crossing routes, I think. I worry that we're too predictable and telegraph our plays at the snap too often. At some point, I want to see Worley pump fake a screen to Howard on one side and then turn and throw it deep down the other side of the field--that is a rough example of how you keep from being predictable and keep defenses off balance. In other words, we'll need to broaden the number of plays we can execute well consistently--and above all stay creative.

Defensively, we got after it, tackled well in space and seemed positionally sound. Corners and LBs played well. We'll see how we hold up against SEC teams--hard to say now. We look improved but Utah State was undersized and frankly not very good, despite the bravado of their coach.

That was the most significant take away for me. We have struggled against mobile qb's and wr's playing qb for the past 8 or so years. This is first time in a long while we have contained so well
