Dog attacks kid, cat defends kid

I heard this mentioned on the radio this AM and, as a father of a 3 and 1 year old, I was hesitant to watch it. Glad I did.

I'm an animal lover in general. I have two cats and a dog and love them all equally. If I was only allowed one pet it would be a cat.

Having said that, I would shoot and animal that attacked me child.

When you played outside as a kid, did your mom and/or dad constantly watch your every move? And the mom was out there almost immediately.

Your observation is quite stupid.

Really? If your son was attacked by a dog would you leave him there or scoop him up and run inside. My parents did supervise until I was old enough to ride a real bike and not a bigwheel.

I've always been more of a dog person until we rescued a cat last year. It had a bunch of kittens that we're all attached to now.

I've realized pretty quickly that cats will take up for & protect their owner without hesitation.

it's like the cat thinks he's a dog. atleast that's what it looked like. (or maybe a mother instinct of the cat protecting "family"?)

Still not a fan of cats, but this one is cool in my book. a real "cool cat"

Looks like a pit. Shocker

Fixed in OP: Dog is identified as a Labrador/Chow mix.

Couple things.

1. Where were the parents?

2. The woman at end runs back into the house and the injured toddler is still outside.

Cool video, weird parenting.

Fixed in OP: Mom went after the dog.

The mom was there within seconds. She must have been very close by.

Pretty sure she was just off camera, outside and in view of her son. It's really strange how the dog walked up on the kid and just looked at him and grabbed on.

I have read/heard that Chows have a tendency to bite and are not good with kids. Again, there are exceptions.

In terms of pits, I think it comes down to breeding/training. I remember two pits I'd ride by on my bike when I was 10-12 y/o. When they'd hear me coming they'd jump off the back porch, tear across the yard, snarling and jumping at the chain link. I never realized how much danger I was in until they dug out from underneath the fence a few years later and killed two neighborhood cats and a dog.

My only recent experience with pits are a friend's and my wife's uncle's. Both are amazingly sweet, gentle with our kids and loving beasts.

It's all in how they are raised. I have been around pits that are some of the sweetest dogs I have ever been around. Both of them were great with my kids too.

This. My family has a pit and had one before this one years back. Got them when they were 5 weeks old and it helps a lot. You have to socialize them as you raise them.

As a general rule, cats suck. Of course, there are exceptions...

Cats Vs Dogs

Cats cover up their crap
Dogs either eat theirs or leave it for you to step in

Cats clean themselves
Dogs roll in crap and expect you to clean them

Cats kill mice, snakes, moles, etc..
Dogs kill grass, dig holes, crap in yard

Cats don't bark
Dogs bark at their own shadow, and when you try to sleep they bark louder and longer

I have owned both and I much rather have a cat than a dog. Dogs are annoying

I've never encountered a mean pit bull. That being said, I would never allow my kids to be near one. There have been too many instances of them that have been raised from puppies that turn vicious for no apparent reason. I'm sure many are fine dogs, but it just isn't worth the risk.

Kidding, of course. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, however wrong it may be.

I've seen examples that suit this post. I've also known dogs that basically had none of those traits and cats that deserved little more than being made into hat. Generally speaking cats are lower maintenance.
