Don DeVoe question...

Heres my opinion, who cares about Devoe enjoy your time left on earth & let true V.F.L.s see what happens next. I stand behind C.B.P. due to the fact it is the only time I cared more about mens b-ball before womens b-ball. Anyway like most on here I just want 2 start kicking azz in the fall go C.D.D.!!!

At least you're willing to admit openly you're just a frontrunner. That's pretty respectable in and of itself.

He was fired by Dickey who claimed during the season DeVoe must get the team back to the NCAA tourney which he did but they got beat in round 1. His firing was not well accepted in the coaching ranks and led to some of the poor hires of Dickey who never cared for basketball to start with.
In the early years DeVoe whipped Joe B Hall on a regular basis as well as Dale Brown. If he had been a good recruiter he would have been at UT for a long time but he was not.

As I said elsewhere, he coached WAY above his team's talent level. It was great to see guys work their tails off on defense, take the shots they were supposed to take, and get it to the right guy with the game on the line; and to see the coach make in-game decisions that actually helped his team. I think his good teams were one guy away from being great teams, and his bad teams were usually two away from being good; which of course goes back to mediocre recruiting.

Oh, and he gave us Dale Ellis and his 65% shooting while double and triple teamed, for which I am eternally grateful.

And, for that matter, Tyrone Beaman, the likes of which we have not seen at point guard since.

He got UT to the dance early on, but then there was about a 5 year drought with no tourney appearance.

Went out in first round in 1989 with a blow out loss to West Virginia.

Had just opened humongous arena and bball team needed to do better to keep it filled.

Unfortunately, subsequent coaching hires were even worse than DeVoe.

TB Arena was invaded by old people who bought up all the lower level season tickets. Those old people are still living, still have those seats, show up late, leave early, and refuse to show enthusiasm during a game.
