Don't tell me it's not about coaching.

I went back and looked at Texas A&M's recruiting rankings since 2009 compared to ours. This was taken from Rivals.com.
2012 UT-17th A&M-15th
2011 UT-13th A&M-27th
2010 UT-9th A&M -17th
2009 UT-10th A&M-22nd

Kevin Sumlin took a team with average talent into Tuscaloosa, Al. and won. With our talent, we should expect much better results.

Agree, definitely a coaching problem in Knoxville since 2008. 4 more years of suck? too late

Can't help but wonder where we would be if Hambone had hired Sumlin 3 years ago?

EDIT: Oh, and if anyone sees Hambone in public, please punch him in the eye:vava: for me! TIA!

You want something even spicier than that just go look at Petrino's recruiting class ranks and what he was able to do with them.

Manziel is a freshman, Sumlin is probably looingk at a possible NC run next year or the year after

Recruiting is important and at a place like UT, it's very important, but all the talent in the world isn't going to get you to the top without a top notch coaching staff that can continue to develop them.

Sumlin would have left to go back to A & M when it opened. Thats why he wasn't offered the UT job. We couldn't take a chance on another bolt after a year or two.

Sorry... but no. With the exception of the two years when Cut came back, coaching has been a problem since about 2000. There have been a few decent years sprinkled in but the decline began when Randy Sanders was given reigns to the offense and Fulmer got lazy recruiting.

Very interesting stuff. I was a strong Dooley supporter until the Miss State game this year, but he's lost me. I tried to say we were rebuilding, he needed more time, etc. etc. but it is now about coaching.

UT had 9 starters return on defense from last year and has gone from a mid 20's defense statistically to now 111th rated defense as of now. Losing Lanier and Randolph hurt and Maggitt being injured didn't help but that shouldn't be that much of a difference.

It's coaching. Plain and simple. We've got 8-9 players on offense that will be drafted and that still isn't enough to bail out our inept coaching staff. That tells you all you need to know.

If we had a coaching staff with a clue, this team would be 8-2, 7-3 right now. We are 1-4 in close games this year where it could've gone to either team at the end. A coaching staff with a clue would have that figure much higher.

If we had hired Sumlin three years ago: The talk on here would be "I can't believe we hired some no-name from Houston" There would have been some racism and now that he has beaten AL we're acting like "we knew it all along". BULL! You had no idea he was going to turn out to be the darling of the SEC.

First of all, Sumlin was not "a no-name from Houston". What he did at Houston spoke volumes about his coaching ability. I would have felt better knowing we hired a HC from a smaller school that had a 35-17 record vs. a coach with a 17-20 record.

What UT's classes were ranked and how they actually turned out are two different things. Many of those recruits never made it in.
