My point is that there are many forms of life. Surely there are some that thrive in basic/alkaline environments.

I think that is only one celled organisms, perhaps a bit higher on the food chain is possible but not much.

Did you read the "rest of the story" link?

The highest form of life I can think of off the top of my head are brine shrimp which flamingos feed on and that gives them their pinkish color.
