Dre Mathieu

Mark Pancratz said on air the other day that size was a huge factor in their decision not to pursue him. They worried about him being able to defend bigger, stronger guards in the SEC. He also said that they undervalued his offensive skills judging by how he's looked, that's he's doing thing at this level they didn't think would translate for JUCO.

And as Sparty mentioned, Pancratz also said it, he's a great fit for a guard friendly pressing style team.

CCM and staff flat missed on Dre and that's the cold hard truth - it happens however with the guys they have recruited to try to play point it just makes it worse that they missed on him. The Big 10 is a much better basketball conference than the SEC and Dre is killing it.

Thompson was the correct pickup.

Barton or Mathieu? Tough choice. Hindsight is now 20/20. Mathieu, while talented and can ball, definitely was a question mark.

I am not sure that he is killing it. Both Hollins' boys still average more. But, yes, PG recruiting has been a disappointment for CCM. Hopefully, Austin is good.

also again, I think if you looked back at our first 4-5 possessions, our pg walked it over, passed and ran away from the ball to let the offense run. Dre's skills wouldn't show out as well.

I agree. I really like Thompson and think he will be a heck of a PG over the years. Dre is good, but I'm thrilled with Thompson. Now, if Cuonzo is here to coach him is another thing. :)

he'll be lucky if his team gets in the NIT. That's all I know right now. We still have a chance at the Ncaa.

"Killing it" is an overstatement. Trae has been very hot or very cold. Scored 12 pts against Miami. GT only scored 42 total. Had 24 last night, but that was against BC. Just like last year, he disappears against good competition.

All of the people you mention did say those things.

And they were flat out wrong. Which is the problem. Sorry - but could you see Bruce passing on an opportunity to bring a Knoxville kid back with those kind of skills to run PG when there was no real PG on the team? And people wonder why Tennessee is never consistent and elite in men's basketball.

The most important thing this team lacks to be able to shift between transition to half court and back again is a PG that has the skillset of Dre. He is quick enough to defend the ball and dribble drive. If the opposing guard overpowers him they have bulls in their bigs to defend and long armed, quick wings to assist. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The fact they could not see it out of him coming out of juco just proves the point of their incompetence. It has taken Zo 4 years to actually recruit a true PG that is coming for next season. 4 years. It will take another couple of years for him to figure out how to use him. Maybe.

I am not sure they were wrong. You stated yourself ways to overcome his weaknesses, not that they were wrong with their assessment. I am wondering if timing was an issue. It seemed like Mathieu blew up late, and we were already after others.

But, overall, I agree. I would maybe say the most disappointing thing for me (about CCM) is his failure to find a true PG.

Cm is a little lacking in the talent evaluation dept., come to think of it he is just lacking period.

I was Dre's biggest fan, I really wanted him here. Now do I think he would be having the same success he's having at Minnesota, doubtful. However, we would have him next and that would be a big plus, but I'm glad he's doing well.

Don't buy that. Thompson and AJ David are good evaluations and will be good players. Ever notice how we offer someone and then later on they'll get a bunch of offers but we were on them first? Kinda like how we offered Hubbs way before he ever became a 5 star.

Moore and Reese definitely exceeded expectations

Not every player is going to become an All-SEC player. You need role players to have a successful team. I think Moore is a great talent , outside of offensively, and will be a contributing factor to how this team finishes the season. Reese has shown he can contribute as well, although, he is either very hot or very cold when it comes to shooting from 3 pt line.

That shot that hit off the top of the backboard last night was ugly

opponent flying in at the last second out of his right eye changed his release a little. I've seen plenty of shots hit it from the corner. Problem with that one is it hit the baseline side of the backboard. Didn't even hit the side of it.
He needs a little quicker release and some arch

Agree. He still has had some strong minutes, especially with his rebounding and defense. He can help this team off the bench and will be key to our success the rest of this season.

I think his arch is fine. His release though looks like he's shooting the ball in slow motion I'm surprised his shot doesn't get blocked more. He is confident in his shot though I'll give him that
