DT interest

You're right that we need better talent at DT but we do have plenty of bodies. Including Phillips and Brimfield who can play OL or DL and Cory Hall, we will have 7 bodies at DT in 2009 and that's assuming that we don't recruit anybody else. I'm almost as worried by the lack of experience we will have at DE. Ben Martin needs to show promise this year and hopefully G. Williams can play some solid downs at DE.

1. Brimfield is an OL and nothing else. He came as a DT and the moved him if that tells you anything.

2. I assumed Williams would play DE since he's huge and played that his short time here before, but a lot of "insiders" are saying he's a MLB. So we'll see I guess.

Defensive line is not either player's best position but my point is that both can play on the D line if needed. Brimfield is at least big enough to take up space at DT if we have an injury or if Dan Williams has a monster year and leaves early. Williams will probably be a great MLB but has the size to line up at DE in obvious passing situations.

I would think G. Williams will line up at MLB since he was All American at that position in Juco this past year. We need him at MLB since Wilson (little undersized) is projected as starter at MLB.

Brimfield will not provide depth at DT, he was moved to OL last summer for a reason and now he's on the 2 deep at OT (he's set). I suspect Phillips will stick to OL as I've read he's a little soft right now (sure, could change), but I would put money on him having a future at OL, not DT. JMO

All of the players mentioned have a future at a position off of the D line. I'm saying that we have available bodies and there is no need to go into panic mode if we can't recruit DT's this year.

I don't want to belabor the point, but I will. We do need to get a couple of DT prospects this year other than hall and I'll tell you why.

Reason being is the SEC DT position needs at least 1 year on campus in order to hope for any kind of production, so having said that, let's look at our DT position dilemma for the O9' season and this is best case scenario:

D. Williams (Sr.)
Nelson (Sr.)
Thomas (Jr.)
Hall (Jr.)
Walls (SO)
Hughes (SO)

Having said that, there's some major assumptions with that lineup. One, D. Williams doesn't leave early for draft (don't anticipate, but you never know). Two, Walls becomes a DT by 09' and is not in JUCO. Three, Hughes is not in JUCO. Four, Nelson and Thomas continue to develop for quality depth.

This isn't even considering the possibility for injuries. I don't feel good about that depth, so I think we should stress a little if we don't get a couple of DT's other than Hall.

There are always JUCO players to get. DT is an area of concern but we should be fine. It is very unlikely that we don't get at least 1 DT recruit this year. I'm not expecting Nelson and Thomas to contribute anything other than depth.

Would love to get Akiem Hicks (Juco), Josh Boyd, and Chris Bonds to go along with Hall. I'll feel much better about our future at DT with this scenario or one similar (2 Juco/2 HS).

I read somewhere that Chavis had a good relationship with Corey Gaines. He's a 4* highly rated DT.

BTW, if Cathey's academics are good enough... I'd take him before a more highly rated out of state kid.

Can he play with stilts?

JK, but seriously, it would be good if Chavis is in good with him. Any top rated DT, short or tall, is a good thing if they are signed.

you forgot Donald Langley who hopefully steps up this season. The rumors about Walls are that he is at 250, key word there is rumor, either way he won't end up a DT.

Wow, good call - don't know how I could miss big Don.

Actually, the rumors are he is around 270, which means he could be DT.

If he is 270 he'll be a DT, yes, but I don't believe that. There has only been one poster to even mention that weight. The original rumor is 250.

Yeah, I figured jumping that much weight in that little time meant lie or steroids.

Josh Boyd committed to Miss State.

Didn't seem like we ever had much of a shot with him but regardless, it's another 4-star DT that is off the board.
