This is crap. $40k for this "illegal" hit. How can Maclin be considered defenseless when he takes 3 steps before getting nailed?! If you don't want to get jacked, then hit the deck. Marvin Harrison perfected this, and that's why he never got jacked. He didn't need a rule to protect him. Now you can't punish teams for sending their WR across the middle. They know it's flag football for a few moments after the catch. No wonder everybody is passing for 400+.

He made the same hit last year on DeSean Jackson, I believe.

I'm OK with the fine.

I've never seen helmet-to-helmet called on a hit on a ball-carrier or kick returner. That's how I view a WR who has taken 3 steps after the catch.

Seriously? Start watching football, then.

Dunta is a damn head hunter and needs to be suspended.

Mostly just a crappy tackle, if anyone was going to get hurt it was Robinson with that impact coming down on the top of his head.

The front/side of the head is going to be more vulnerable. The receiver will usually be the loser in this battle.

The problem here is he didn't try to hit with his shoulder or forearm. He went in like Zinadine Zidane for a head butt and you just can't do that.

What about the shot to the head Ryan took and there wasn't even a flag thrown?

Its an illegal hit. He lead with the head and tried to take Maclins head off. He just about launched himself at him. Im the biggest Falcons homer in the world...But that was an illegal hit from a repeat offender.

That's the NFL now get used to it.

I think Jackson was out 2 or 3 games after that one.

2 very different hits. Jackson barely had a foot down. Maclin had 3 down. I think Dunta was trying to put his helmet on the ball. Maclin ducked.

because a ball carrier is treated differently by the rules right?

What I'm saying is at what point does he become a ball-carrier? He took 3 steps. He had more than enough time to hit the deck, but he didn't want to hit the deck, he wanted more yards. Because he took a risk, the defense should punish him. Essentially the rules are mitigating offensive risk.

This is why we have 400+ yard games being thrown left and right. WR's are now scott-free across the middle. Even 3 steps after the catch, you can't punish them. It's to the point of absurdity.

You can punish them. Just not up high. Put your shoulderpads in his chest or his gut. He'll go down just as hard but isn't likely to get a concussion unless it's from his head bouncing off the turf when he goes down.
I love to see big hits as much as anybody, but going up high is just dirty no matter how you look at it.
