Weird comparison as they dont match up in roles. Also very heck no. Awaka was the backup the proper person in that comparison would be JJJ. You could make the argument that thus far Okpara>=Aidoo. Milicic>JJJ but DK is leagues ahead of Lanier. I would say that we came out of the whole thing a lot less far behind than most would have thought. So far all the transfers that have played have been with Dubar getting a mulligan for now.

I think the exciting thing for this season, for me at least., is the fact that Estrealla and Phillips have progressed a ton. I mean history tells us Barnes players will progress if they stick with it almost always. I just felt like those guys were so far behind last year. This seasons results so far have me so excited for the next 2-3 years until Barnes retires.
I would say it's a minimum of a wash

I agree that Knecht is a better overall player but I think Chaz can come very close to Knecht's production for us this season. He is already taking over games like Knecht did and does it in a way that doesn't leave other guys on the floor standing around and watching.

Milicic has 3 level scoring ability, good ball handling and great passing ability while creating mismatches with his size. Dubar looks like he will be a solid 8-12 point contributor and create size mismatches once he gets fully acclimated.

Add improvements from Cade, Gainey, Mashack's offense, Okpara's physical play and anything we might get from Carr/Estrella and the sum of this team's parts is greater...... overall size, versatility, defense and rebounding are much improved.

I’m excited about the potential of this team, but I’m hesitant to say we’re better than last year yet. I also think better is going to be hard to judge because I think the SEC is getting better every year and is looking to be really deep this year. So wins may be a lot harder to come by.

Agreed but I think we are more equipped this year to deal with the tougher competition and during the NCAAT we will benefit from being less reliant on one guy.

Teams are not going to have the luxury of doubling one superstar like they did in the tourney last year, which was somewhat effective and forced less reliable offensive options to make plays....which they often were not able to do.

This is an important graphic to me. They didn't creep back. We owned them from tipoff without any meaningful lull.
Yeah, both teams reverted back to around the norm in the 2nd half. Baylor outscored us by 11, I think, but we got nothing from Lanier and seemed satisfied with just protecting the lead rather than being aggressive and risking giving up some scoring runs to give Baylor confidence that they could get back in it.

We handled it pretty well

I agree with you individually. How do you feel as a group? Knecht kind of blows the curve. He can take over a game inside and out with his physicality as well as shooting. However, will there be much difference in the box score and results? I think Lanier has the ability to produce similar numbers. While he is not as physical and definitely not the NBA prospect DK is, he may be a better shooter.
I mean as a group the 3 named no. What we lost in total vs what we gained is hard to call. So far its looking like we are a better team overall. But its super early in the season.

I think Milicic will be what would tip the balance. He and Lanier are looking better on defense than expected. We should have a good idea by the time we get to SEC play. The one advantage of our cupcake OOC schedule is player development opportunities.

#13 BAylor was a cupcake?
Nope but thats one out of our entire OOC schedule. And who knows the way we spanked them maybe they are. We have already played the 'hard' half of our OOC schedule. We have illinois left as a possible ranked opponent. Don't get me wrong this is not football. Having a weak OOC schedule for us is not necessarily bad especially for a team with so many new faces. As long as we take advantage of it and gel as a team and win out in the SEC its worth it. Scheduling and such really only matters in basketball if youre on the bubble. Also our SEC schedule should more than make up for it.

Lanier/Milicic/Okpara > Knecht,/Aidoo/Awaka

This year's team may be an improvement over last years' team. Mashak is better offensively. Estrella is going to be better if he gets healthy. Dubar looks like a really good player. When Phillips lets the game come to him, he is going to be good.

I really like this squad.

This squad has a myriad of different scoring options whereas Knecht was option 1,2 and 3 last season.
