Whoah, it was a 4.4 magnitude. That ain’t good. Hopefully we aren’t about to have something major happen here soon with all the quakes East Tn has been having lately.

Just a tidbit of info....the ripple affect of an Earthquake, East of the Mississippi is greater than an Earthquake west of the Mississippi.

Is that a result of the shallow depths?

You could say that, but it is the difference and the vibrations along rock based formations East of the Mississippi vs Sand Based Soils West of Mississippi.

Differences in density elastic properties of rock greatly influence the velocity of seismic waves. Properties East/West differ greatly at the Mississippi. Sandier soils allow for absorption more than Rock based soils.....4.0 in Memphis felt 500 to 700 miles away from Epiccenter.....as oppose to 4.0 In California 100 to 200 miles....

Decatur/Spring City area. Said it was a shallow quake, that's why people felt it so far away.
I did! I thought I was going crazy when I got out of the shower this morning. Our house shook, and I stood in the living room for a minute, then just oh well. When my wife woke me up a little while ago, she asked if I felt it.

I felt it

Note: I am in TX and this was just free association theater. I did not actually feel anything

Kinda bummed I missed this one. There was one centered around Mentone when I was in high school, and I happened to be awake using the bathroom in the middle of the night and felt that one. Slept right through this one though.

The USGS has a function where you can submit a report if you feel an earthquake. This one has submissions from Abilene to Minnesota and Massachusetts. I don’t see how that is possible, I’m in Chattanooga and it felt like the washer was out of balance. I can’t imagine how it could be very perceptible 700 miles away.

I remember when that one happened in DC and you could feel it in Nrth Carolina. I remember thinking “ was that a freaking earthquake?”

I had woke up about 5 minutes before it happened today. I thought a plane was just flying low overhead or a huge truck coming by my place. Then it just kept going... got on social media immediately after and everyone in Athens was already posting all over social media about it so I confirmed I wasn't crazy.
