My wife quit going there years ago because some unruly teens were hanging around. They basically took over the place, and were very rude. This was probably 20 years ago. They may have run the kids off since that time, but she didn't want to deal with that, so she quit going. I doubt that she was the only one..

Unfortunately this is the way that all malls are moving. Now there will be huge strip malls to take their place and will leave large unoccupied buildings to deteriorate until the malls make a come back in 20 years. Or the down town commerce center will be revitalized for a while.

I found this special report from 1982 about malls very fascinating.

Isn’t that supposed to be loosely based on Oak Ridge? I’m pretty sure I saw a map of Roane County in one of the episodes.

I've heard that but just as speculation. There are East Tennessee references all over the place. Even though it takes place in a fictional town in Indiana, it's made pretty clear the fictional county the town is in is called Roane County. It shows up in several places — signs, school bus, etc. At the beginning of this last season when they were setting up for the fair, my wife spotted a guy in a Knoxville World's Fair tshirt, plain as day. I think I remember someone mentioning Etowah at some point too, which isn't the OR area but a regional reference anyway.

Seems like it's at least a nod to Oak Ridge if nothing else.

The Duffer Brothers used to spend summers when they were younger in Blount County with their aunt and uncle who still live there today. The facility in season 1 and 2 is more than loosely based off Oak Ridge National Laboratory and it's secrecy.

Check out this article: This 'Stranger Things' theory suggests show's setting is actually based off East Tennessee

After reading that I have no doubt Stranger Things absolutely has ties to East Tennessee.

I went there with my mother and sister shortly after it opened in June of 1984. My sister went to Lens Crafters for glasses. That was the first time that I ever ate pizza from Sbarro. I never went there very much but I do remember the map of the UT campus on the floor. West Town Mall didn't have a food court back in '84, so East Town seemed like they were ahead of the game for a short time. Their demise all comes down to location, location, location. Further west the better, in most cases. RIP.
