1979, Dance the Night Away - still the single most beautiful guitar tone I have ever heard and the reason I started to play. His lead stuff was other-worldly but his playful and intricate rhythm work was equally amazing.
I put in in the other thread but VH1 was the first album I ever purchased in large part due to Eruption. The story goes it wasn't even going to be on the album but the producer overhead him playing it and wanted it added.
And the Cradle Will Rock was the first song that hooked me. I love Mean Street and Drop Dead Legs & Beautiful Girls.. And many others. His rhythm playing has always inspired me as a guitarist.. From the brown sound to the way he did embellishments. Of course I loved the soloing.. I was 10 when I heard Van Halen for the first time.
That is my favorite tone of the era. It is embedded into my brain. I remember meeting up with friends at a rope swing, pulling in to park and that glorious sound just erupting from someone's speakers. The opening guitar, the bass and drum hit...that **** defines the sound of summer for me.
Aside from the ridiculous talent, what I love about Eddie is how freaking happy the dude looked playing. Dude had an effortless smile while playing things no one else even thought to play while most rock guitarists were making the stink-face riffing on pentatonic minor. Eddie was a joy.
I know Eddie Van Halen on numerous occasions talked about Eric Clapton’s time in Cream as his biggest influence. Been looking at all the well wishes from his fellow rock contemporaries regarding his passing. Not been able to find one from Clapton. It reminds me about an article 25 or more years back where Clapton was asked about Eddie Van Halen and Clapton replies I don’t like all that “showy off” stuff. At the time I thought it was an arrogant and rude response. Has anyone been able to locate any Clapton references to Van Halen. I have been trying different combinations in google and only find the information where Eddie complements Clapton but nothing vice-versa.
