Eddie Van Halen

I know Eddie Van Halen on numerous occasions talked about Eric Clapton’s time in Cream as his biggest influence. Been looking at all the well wishes from his fellow rock contemporaries regarding his passing. Not been able to find one from Clapton. It reminds me about an article 25 or more years back where Clapton was asked about Eddie Van Halen and Clapton replies I don’t like all that “showy off” stuff. At the time I thought it was an arrogant and rude response. Has anyone been able to locate any Clapton references to Van Halen. I have been trying different combinations in google and only find the information where Eddie complements Clapton but nothing vice-versa.

I've heard the same thing. I remember reading an article in Spin many many years ago that Clapton always thought Prince was a better pure guitarist than Eddie. He thought that since Eddie couldn't read or write music that he was a "hack."

Thats interesting because Clapton could not read music either.

Little tidbit. Growing up in the 70/80s I'm sure some of you all had the round dimmer switches for lights. Eddie hooked one of these to his amp, back in the day, to choke the power off to change the sound.

Even bigger tidbit Re evh:
a friend of mine is the part owner of a boutique amp company and traveling guitar tech for brad Whittington and joe Perry of Aerosmith. wanted him to settle an argument that EVH was a top 5 guitarist of all time ( he refused to be baited and agreed top 10 but too subjective He said). What he did say he was undoubtedly and in the industry widely accepted as the number one musician when it came to innovation and invention of sound. Never really thought of him that way but he assured me a lot of what makes great guitars and amps sound today was at the hands of Eddie Van Halen.

Pretty much what my friend said 1) Hendrix
2) everybody else
hell he had a couple of guys that the real musicians Know that would Prob be top 5 I’d never thought of like Jeff beck, brian may, and jerry reed And the obvious jimmy page and SRV, Richie Blackmore of deep purple But no Clapton

I dont play. But, musicians whom I respect say that what makes each person unique is the style they uniquely have crafted or perfected.
Larry Keel is magician on bluegrass flat top, Sam Bush on Mandolin, Vassar Clements on fiddle, SRV on blues. You get my point.

What made Jimi the goat was that he could transcend any genre on guitar, blues, rock,
soul and just shred.

As a guitarist, I can tell you that EVH was a far superior guitarist to Hendrix. EVH did more to revolutionize guitar playing than anyone else and it’s not even close.

I hope you enjoyed this article as much as I did. Disclaimer, this discussion is akin to Hubbs et al breaking down film. I play 6 chords, badly. Ive been a fan of great guitar playing since a lad.

100 Greatest Guitarists

Page and Hendrix are always gonna be my faves. It is subjective. Like saying Bonham is goat drummer, im sure Rush's drummer or Slayer's or even Lars may be better drummers. But, for me what the way Bonham transcends decades, and, as badass as Zepp is...🐐

Id also put SRV at #2 or 3 on that listz

Prince and Chet Atkins should both be top 10 at LEAST!

I think that article was written by someone that doesn’t or hasn’t really played much guitar. Eddie Van Halen’s rhythm guitar parts are actually harder to duplicate than most of his leads. His rhythm parts are what truly separates him from everyone else. His sense of groove was unparalleled, and even top notch guitars it’s like Satriani and available have been saying the same. And don’t get me wrong, Hendrix was a genius player, but it’s like Hendrix came along and said there’s more than 3 colors on the guitar, then Eddie came along and defined those millions of colors.

Antasio is a great guitarist, but not groundbreaking. Same for Derek Trucks. That guy can play circles around just about anyone. But as far game changers, Eddie is number 1.

ill have to defer here. Always been a VH fan.

Hendrix Blues album is literally one of my faves, as is SRV's Texas Flood or Unplugged. Picking 12 string is pretty badass.

Was going to link SV playing his 12 string but, im sure you're aware. Just watched this for first time. I recall watching him live on ASL on PBS (TV) for first time, jaw dropped. Dude wss a magician. Respect for amount of time in practice for folks who are that accomplished.

Edit: NM here's the 12 string.

SRV was great, but he completely ripped off Albert King. I still love him though.

I am a big Van Hale fan. and I truely miss the old rock and roll. I am a huge fan of the Van Halen/Hagar era of music as well. Here is an interesting tribute video I just watched and at the end Sammy speaks highly of Eddie's composing skills and how they were a great writing duo. I hope you enjoy it.
