Tennessee Football - We are the Outlaws
On Sunday the University of Tennessee football program reached critical mass. Our power players tried to hire Ohio States Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano. Who? Yeah. You may remember him from his time at the mighty Rutgers University where he amassed a 68-67 record in 11 seasons. In 2010 he was pounded into the ground by a Butch Jones led Cincinnati team by the tune of 69-38. That particular Cincinnati team finished the season 4-8. We have a knack for trying to hire a coach that the previous imbecile of a coach made mincemeat out of for some inexplicable reason.
This is not an article about Schiano and his ineptitude though. You can find plenty of those. There are many front page Google articles showing exactly what kind of character the man possesses and how hes just a downright mediocre coach. Thats not even factoring in the Penn State mess. John Currie, at the behest of Jimmy Haslam, tried to hire Butch Jones 2.0. And finally, the Tennessee fans, boosters, VFLs, and even those in the Tennessee congress said full throated, WEVE HAD ENOUGH!
Most of the national sports journalists and talking heads are saying that we tried to put a hit out on Greg Schiano and that hes a good guy and a good coach and Tennessee should be ecstatic to have such a wonderful coach. Excuse me? Since when are we expected to be OK with a coach whose career record is right at .500? Just because the House of Haslam pushed through Derek Dooley and Butch Jones absolutely does not mean that we should settle for mediocrity. This is a fanbase that put over 90,000 fans in the seats this year for a noon kickoff game against South Carolina after getting ran out of the country the week before by Georgia. We have one of the most passionate fanbases in the country. The facilities in Knoxville are top notch. Everyone in the state thats a fan, alum, booster, or VFL seems to realize that except for the Haslams.
Ive read many comments over the past couple of days that we are the laughingstock of college football. Who cares what a the national media is saying? The fans, and most importantly some key VFLs like Al Wilson, Fuad Reviez, and Jayson Swain made it be known that if Schiano was the next coach they were out. And this had nothing to do with the Penn State allegations. This was because they werent going to settle (again) for the cheap hire and finally stood up and wouldnt kiss the ring of the mighty Haslams.
And for you Peyton Manning fans I hate to tell you he was all-in on Schiano. He was calling former VFLs Sunday morning breaking the news before it was official. The reception that he got shocked him. He couldnt believe how irate former players were over this deal. He, along with Haslam and Currie thought this was a slam dunk homerun hire for the Vols. Oh, and Mr. 16 is a big part of the reason Tee Martin hasnt got a sniff for OC or potential future Head Coach. I dont think Tee is ready myself but Manning doesnt want Tee Martin around Knoxville, period. Believe that or not, thats 100% the truth. Just follow some of the local Knoxville media who has reported whats transpired over the past few days and they will tell you that Manning got in line with Haslams wishes because of his future NFL GM aspirations. I question anyone that wants to be GM of the Cleveland Browns.
I wont even discuss the Gruden situation. Its very possible I was duped again and getting bad information. I dont think anyone that I was getting info from though was intentionally misleading anyone. I believe Gruden was in play and it was ultimately, again, the Haslams that said a resounding NO.
John Currie, you petulant little turd. You didnt want to fire Butch Jones. In fact, you were content to let us squeeze by at 6-6 and keep the trumpet blower for another year. And, when things went so far south that you had no choice other than to fire Butch Jones your master plan all along was to hire a career .500 coach and to forego hiring a search committee? You sat out in your little cabana last week over Thanksgiving in the Bahamas without a care in the world. You sat there with a smug look on your face going, My God, Ive done it. Ive hired GREG SCHIANO. It came out the day that Butch Jones was fired that Currie told those in his inner circle that he was hiring someone that was BIG, EXPENSIVE, and EXPLOSIVE. Well he definitely got the expensive and explosive thing right. Boy did he get the explosive thing right. The OSU AD admitted that Currie had spoken with Schiano 2 ½ weeks ago. There was no one else on the list. Haslam tried to hire Schiano for the Cleveland Browns a few years ago. He has some type of infatuation with Greg Schiano. Maybe GS whispered some sweet nothings in Haslams ear a few years ago. But, Haslam does have a track record of really making those awesome hires. Hes the same guy that drafted Johnny Football because a homeless guy told him to and made a joke out of it over drafting Carson Wentz. That is literally the guy who is pulling all of the strings at UT.
As far as the rumors of who may be the next UT coach it looks like Mike the flying mullet Gundy is the leader in the clubhouse. Why on Gods green earth we would pay him 8.2 million per year is beyond me but its not my money. Actually, we will wind up paying him 8.2 (if he accepts) because of the piss poor job that the House of Haslam and their puppet boy John Currie did by trying to sneak in Greg Schiano. For once, the fanbase, VFLs, etc drew the line in the sand and they backed off. If not Gundy I still think Chris Petersen would come for the right amount of money and he was my #2 behind Jon Gruden all along. Jeff Brohm wouldnt excite me to no end but I think he is also a solid option. Mike Leach at WSUs a good coach who would be very interesting in Knoxville. Chad Morris from SMU would be worth a look. Or, at the very least, think about hiring David Cutcliffe and bringing in Tee Martin as OC if not head coach. Any and all of those names would have been better than Greg Schiano. So, for them to say well we tried to deliver the best coach out there is complete and utter horse manure. Theres a list of 100 names Id throw out there before Schiano. I mean my goodness if you are stooping down to that level just grab a current coordinator like Brent Venebals at Clemson. And I know some of my friends hate to even think about this but Id give Lane Kiffin a call. I know he had some ethical issues the last time he was here but now hes 10 years older and single. Kiffin would embrace the Outlaw image better than nearly anyone they could hire. And he would be damn grateful to have this job.
One day there will be a book written about the madness that has gone down over these past few days. The narrative from the national reporters is that UTs fans are a cancer and kept a good guy and great coach from getting a job. Maybe ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo Sports, etc should hire better writers and on air talents. Because, without a shadow of a doubt, we dodged the biggest bullet possible by stopping the Schiano hire. Who cares what they think of us? We are now the Outlaws. Embrace it, live it, love it.
