I'm in, the media can shove it. We took the powers that be to task and they don't like it when "the rabble" reminds them that they're nothing without us.

I like a lot of what you said. But I'm not totally into your list. If I were Currie I'd be targeted Bobby petrino. Then Justin fuente. Fuente has about a 13 million dollar buy out but spread out o er a 5 year contract it could be overcome. I hate the idea of brahm. He hasn't proven anything yet.
But as far as the outlaw thing...I'm all onboard. Is against the world. It could be used in our favor. Even with recruits. And I hate to say it but if you want a guy that was born to wear that outlaw hat and is a damn good coach to boot...that guy is lane kiffin

They had some "expert" on CBS radio earlier and he blasted Currie for being so clueless as to what the fan reaction to Schiano would be. He went on to say it was one thing for the fans to be so angry...but it was the "donors" (as he called them) that really made Currie back out of it. He said when you have people saying "we will not support this university with any more money if you hire this coach"...that was what really resonated and caused Currie to back out. Yes..we as fans had an effect...but fortunately we have some really rich and powerful fellow fans...and they weren't having this garbage.

DownnDirty, man, you spend too much of your time worrying what other people think of you.

Josey Wales never wasted any time "embracing" ideas, living up to an image, or writing manifestos, you know?

Better suggestion: live your life the way you live it, be you, be your best you, however you define that, and let them write your epitaph after you're dead.

Power is almost never given up. It has to be fought for or taken. The Haslam's have purchased their power. I've never considered giving money and in turn having buildings named after you to be philanthropy. It's influence buying.

Sportswriters and broadcasters are use to seeing their faces and their opinions in print, on the radio, or television regularly. It's a form of power and probably makes it impossible to keep your ego in check after a while.

What Tennessee fans did Sunday was seen as a threat by both of those groups. An unprecedented threat. I find it very telling that many maybe even most reports and tweets used perjorative words like "mob" to describe the events. I'm An old reired fart and had yet to sign up for Twitter but I finally did Sunday so I could see some of the media backlash I was reading about. It's obvious social media is a way of taking power from both groups. At least to me it is.

Some people may say that in the big scheme of things, this is just a routine search for a head football coach and why would a university community and state officials exhibit a protest such as we saw Sunday. Well, to take a few liberties here, I say that this is a microcosm of the bigger angst in the country, especially as it relates to big government and elites dictating to the "little people" how we are to think and act, while they waste our tax dollars on things we would not have voted for. To the extent citizens are fed up with having no voice in how their tax money is collected and spent, and the fact that elected bureaucrats spend recklessly and waste our money, we are OVER IT BIGLY. We will not pay for mediocrity because some administrative stooge says we have to. We will not settle for mediocrity from those whose salaries we are paying with our hard-earned dollars. Remember the Rebellion of Athens TN.
I think we all have that independent spirit in us still.

As of Sunday we are an Outlaw fan base and that's just fine by me. Bowing to authority brought us Dooley and Jones. We drew a line with Schiano. Let the sport writers run their mouths it doesn't matter. We deserve a winner in Knoxville.

The CFB world learned Sunday that we are as crazy as we are passionate.

So laughable.

Tennessee Football - We are the Outlaws

syfRLen.jpg

On Sunday the University of Tennessee football program reached critical mass. Our power players tried to hire Ohio State’s Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano. Who? Yeah. You may remember him from his time at the mighty Rutgers University where he amassed a 68-67 record in 11 seasons. In 2010 he was pounded into the ground by a Butch Jones led Cincinnati team by the tune of 69-38. That particular Cincinnati team finished the season 4-8. We have a knack for trying to hire a coach that the previous imbecile of a coach made mincemeat out of for some inexplicable reason.

This is not an article about Schiano and his ineptitude though. You can find plenty of those. There are many front page Google articles showing exactly what kind of character the man possesses and how he’s just a downright mediocre coach. That’s not even factoring in the Penn State mess. John Currie, at the behest of Jimmy Haslam, tried to hire Butch Jones 2.0. And finally, the Tennessee fans, boosters, VFL’s, and even those in the Tennessee congress said full throated, “WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!”

Most of the “national” sports journalists and talking heads are saying that we tried to put a hit out on Greg Schiano and that he’s a good guy and a good coach and Tennessee should be ecstatic to have such a wonderful coach. Excuse me? Since when are we expected to be OK with a coach whose career record is right at .500? Just because the House of Haslam pushed through Derek Dooley and Butch Jones absolutely does not mean that we should settle for mediocrity. This is a fanbase that put over 90,000 fans in the seats this year for a noon kickoff game against South Carolina after getting ran out of the country the week before by Georgia. We have one of the most passionate fanbases in the country. The facilities in Knoxville are top notch. Everyone in the state that’s a fan, alum, booster, or VFL seems to realize that except for the Haslam’s.

I’ve read many comments over the past couple of days that we are the laughingstock of college football. Who cares what a the national media is saying? The fans, and most importantly some key VFL’s like Al Wilson, Fuad Reviez, and Jayson Swain made it be known that if Schiano was the next coach they were out. And this had nothing to do with the Penn State allegations. This was because they weren’t going to settle (again) for the cheap hire and finally stood up and wouldn’t kiss the ring of the mighty Haslam’s.

And for you Peyton Manning fans I hate to tell you he was all-in on Schiano. He was calling former VFL’s Sunday morning breaking the news before it was official. The reception that he got shocked him. He couldn’t believe how irate former players were over this deal. He, along with Haslam and Currie thought this was a slam dunk homerun hire for the Vols. Oh, and Mr. 16 is a big part of the reason Tee Martin hasn’t got a sniff for OC or potential future Head Coach. I don’t think Tee is ready myself but Manning doesn’t want Tee Martin around Knoxville, period. Believe that or not, that’s 100% the truth. Just follow some of the local Knoxville media who has reported what’s transpired over the past few days and they will tell you that Manning got in line with Haslam’s wishes because of his future NFL GM aspirations. I question anyone that wants to be GM of the Cleveland Browns.

I won’t even discuss the Gruden situation. It’s very possible I was duped again and getting bad information. I don’t think anyone that I was getting info from though was intentionally misleading anyone. I believe Gruden was in play and it was ultimately, again, the Haslam’s that said a resounding NO.

John Currie, you petulant little turd. You didn’t want to fire Butch Jones. In fact, you were content to let us squeeze by at 6-6 and keep the trumpet blower for another year. And, when things went so far south that you had no choice other than to fire Butch Jones your master plan all along was to hire a career .500 coach and to forego hiring a search committee? You sat out in your little cabana last week over Thanksgiving in the Bahamas without a care in the world. You sat there with a smug look on your face going, “My God, I’ve done it. I’ve hired GREG SCHIANO.” It came out the day that Butch Jones was fired that Currie told those in his inner circle that he was hiring someone that was BIG, EXPENSIVE, and EXPLOSIVE. Well he definitely got the expensive and explosive thing right. Boy did he get the explosive thing right. The OSU AD admitted that Currie had spoken with Schiano 2 ½ weeks ago. There was no one else on the list. Haslam tried to hire Schiano for the Cleveland Browns a few years ago. He has some type of infatuation with Greg Schiano. Maybe GS whispered some sweet nothings in Haslam’s ear a few years ago. But, Haslam does have a track record of really making those awesome hires. He’s the same guy that drafted Johnny Football because a homeless guy told him to and made a joke out of it over drafting Carson Wentz. That is literally the guy who is pulling all of the strings at UT.

As far as the rumors of who may be the next UT coach it looks like Mike “the flying mullet” Gundy is the leader in the clubhouse. Why on God’s green earth we would pay him 8.2 million per year is beyond me but it’s not my money. Actually, we will wind up paying him 8.2 (if he accepts) because of the piss poor job that the House of Haslam and their puppet boy John Currie did by trying to sneak in Greg Schiano. For once, the fanbase, VFL’s, etc drew the line in the sand and they backed off. If not Gundy I still think Chris Petersen would come for the right amount of money and he was my #2 behind Jon Gruden all along. Jeff Brohm wouldn’t excite me to no end but I think he is also a solid option. Mike Leach at WSU’s a good coach who would be very interesting in Knoxville. Chad Morris from SMU would be worth a look. Or, at the very least, think about hiring David Cutcliffe and bringing in Tee Martin as OC if not head coach. Any and all of those names would have been better than Greg Schiano. So, for them to say well we tried to deliver the best coach out there is complete and utter horse manure. There’s a list of 100 names I’d throw out there before Schiano. I mean my goodness if you are stooping down to that level just grab a current coordinator like Brent Venebals at Clemson. And I know some of my friends hate to even think about this but I’d give Lane Kiffin a call. I know he had some ethical issues the last time he was here but now he’s 10 years older and single. Kiffin would embrace the Outlaw image better than nearly anyone they could hire. And he would be damn grateful to have this job.

One day there will be a book written about the madness that has gone down over these past few days. The narrative from the national reporters is that UT’s fans are a cancer and kept a good guy and great coach from getting a job. Maybe ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo Sports, etc should hire better writers and on air talents. Because, without a shadow of a doubt, we dodged the biggest bullet possible by stopping the Schiano hire. Who cares what they think of us? We are now the Outlaws. Embrace it, live it, love it.

Heck yes!

Thanks for the words. I actually don't care what the national media thinks of the fanbase. I was on the other side of Butch Jones for 3 years and didn't care. I just wanted to write something out to express my thoughts. I feel alot of our fans are upset over how we are perceived. All I'm saying is that now is the time to embrace this outlaw image.
