Emmanuel Moseley has gained 18 lbs since getting here

A high protein diet and intensive weight training will do this. Plus these guys are young, generally healthy, and have frames that accept extra muscle. Added to that, often these guys are still growing. Not hard to believe at all. Sumo wrestlers do it all the time, though to an extreme undesired in football.

^This. Eat like a horse and lift heavy and often..you'll gain the weight. The layman gym rat has a hard time coming to terms with this because they don't know how to work out.

Our S & C coach is suppose to be one of the best isn't he?

Lawson is good...he's been with Jones at every stop of his career and knows what it takes to run his system to perfection...we were noticeably better conditioned than some of our opponents this season. In addition, the full-time nutritionist that they have, Allison Maurer (@BigOrangeFuel) is top-notch. Not a lot of schools have the facilities and staff that we do when it comes to nutritional stuff.

Endless chicken/fish, veggies, and training at least 3-4 days a week will do it. You know they're eating healthy which is a huge part of gaining good weight.

I gained 20lbs at basic training and that was with zero weight lifting. Just PT and three solid meals a day. I've always had a hard time putting on weight. I think it possible.

Didn't Bray add some weight right before the draft? He was always wirey.

Yeah, he's up to 230 now

The studies I have seen indicate you can put on an oz of muscle a day at most. This is with athletes who are training hard and eating correctly. So you get a pound of muscle every 16 days if conditions are absolutely optimal and you aren't taking steroids.

Most of what these guys have gained will be water or fat if they have put on that much weight in a short period of time. The largest amount of muscle being gained over the course of a year that nutritionists have been able to record is roughly 18lbs. So yeah, if a kid puts on that much weight in a month or so then it either isn't all muscle or they are taking steroids. At least that is if you can believe places like the Colgan Institute of Nutritional Sciences which is where these figures come from.

It would be interesting to see how much difference it makes if a kid isn't done growing yet since it wasn't clear what the ages were of the people in the studies.

I'm sure you know the science, but I find it hard to believe a kid could go from benching 185 a couple of times to doing 225 a few times in a month and only put on 2 lbs of muscle, though they are going from boys to men so there will be a natural gain. I look like I'm 15 in my freshman photos, and like I'm 25 my sr yr.

Sounds to me that they are on a solid Body Building diet. I'd say they are eating at least every 2-3 hours and something like 6-7 meals per day. I'd also say these guys are getting the best of nutrition to help them gain weight. I'd say its a protein and carbs before and after training type diet. This would possibly include protein shakes (Muscle Milk), creatine, glutamine and other supplements. Also got to take into account these are 17-18 year old kids who are probably used to eating junk food and now they are getting properly feed balance meals.

^Good post here. Also consider that these guys could be adding supplements like creatine to their regiment, which can help you gain muscle while putting on water weight as well. I'm really not surprised by the gain at all. Free food any time you want it + world class training + testosterone through the roof + being an SEC caliber athlete = weight gain. Not all of it is muscle, but even so, he has plenty of time to add more weight then slim down to season shape this summer. All he is doing is bulking up, and if done naturally (which there is no reason to think he is not), muscle gain comes with fat and water gain.

So I was listening to TSR on the way to work today and they said that several of the EE have gained weight since getting on campus. They said that Moseley has gained 18 pounds. I find that very hard to believe.

They also said others have gained a bunch as well... what are they feeding those boys over there! :)

Jarred Lorenzen is UT's Weight Gaining Coach...

These are all good points. I was going to mention creatine but the post was already too long. It would be interesting to see how much water and fat gain there typically is per oz of muscle gain. There is probably a little gain in your ligaments and, perhaps in your bones as well to accommodate the new muscle, but I would imagine those would be fairly negligible by comparison.

Amazing what physical excercise (training) and eating 3 meals a day plus will do for you. I gained 32 pounds in basic training and had to get all new uniforms before leaving basic. While the overweight guys lost weight, the skinnies gained. We didnt have the special diets or S&C coach to guide and assist us, only the drill sergeant using the motivational tactic of the day, LOL.

It is physiologically impossible to gain that much true muscle mass that quickly.

Although heavy training will cause muscle tissue to retain water as part of the healing process. Did I really just reply to my own post? Oh dear:crazy:

I went to basic weighing 145 and left at 175. I actually had abs for a while. That all went away once I got married though...

I was 6'5" 155 going in, 185 after basic. When I came home to visit, my friends were like dam, your legs are huge... Lol

My wife kept talking about it, I lost like 5-10 and it turned soft by yr three.... Lol

Good news because weight and strength are the most important things in competing in the SEC. Every player is so big and strong you have to be able to match them physically.
