End In 2012?

Funny the Mayans know when the world ends but didn't know that the Spanish were coming? Not really the culture I would go to looking for answers.

Will probably be as eventful as Y2K.

The Mayans were victims of their own mythology. The Spanish bore an uncanny resemblance to one of their chief gods, I would argue that they did know the Spanish were coming, their civilization was already in deep decline, local weather had been very harsh for decades. They were in a perpetual cycle of "sacred war". They were ripe for the picking. There are many who believe that had the Spanish come 100 years earlier the outcome would not have been good for the Spanish.

It's all about the planetary alignment and the disruptions this will cause - or so the stories go.

This what I understand as well. Some planetary scientists would tell you that an alignment of this nature could and probably would cause natural disasters like earthquakes and tidal surges. Would it be to the degree that would cause life on earth to cease? I doubt it.

Their calender and astronomical knowledge is astounding though.

I have family in the Pentecostal faith and they were talking about their pastor and his prophetic abilities, all things he's predicted from the pulpet have come to pass. There are other pastors that are prophetic as well, anyway, they can't see further than 2015.

It'll take atleast that long until the Astros farm system gets rebuilt. Thanks for crushing my hopes and dreams of another World Series appearance. Hell, I bet Oswalt retires in 2011 just to put icing on the cake.

I curse you OP.

The is a simple reason for the Mayan calender ending on 12/21/2012, they ran out of rock, if they had started with a bigger rock it would have ended later.

I did run into a guy that looked to be about 15/16 Mayan at wall mart the other day and he made some rather pointed predictions about 12/21/2012.

He said on that date that Barack Hussein Obama would be a lame duck and we would be preparing to swear in a Mayan president and he predicted the new president's appointees would all have the math skills to do their tax returns correctly. :)

This is what I have heard as well. That the alignment of the planets will have an unpredictable effect on the gravitational pull between the planets and the sun. But really, they will only be aligned for a minute. How bad could it be? Will this alignment cause the gravitational pull to stop briefly for some of the planets and they drift farther from the sun? Make it stronger and pull them closer? Who knows? At any rate, I am taking the same approach I took to Y2K. I ain't gonna do squat. If we all die, we all die. No sense getting all bent out of shape about it.

The history channel did a special on this topic a month or 2 ago and it was interesting as all conspiracy theories are. but at the end of the day, it just doesn't resonate with myself. If it does not line up with Biblical prophecy, then I discount it. But it is interesting to listen to other's viewpoints and ideas and why they believe the way they believe.

Very Rickey Henderson-ish.

I find it interesting to read about and follow about like alien landings and area 51 stuff. But at the end of the day I see it like a y2k or like back in grade school when someone said they had predicted the "big one" earthquake along the fault line that runs down the border in west TN. We had to come to school with disaster survival kits and all that crap. Fail.
