Their new coach bemoaning the fact that he's having to recruit his own players out of the portal speaks to the frigging mess that college football is in.

There are guys that will never play a down of NFL football wanting huge bucks to play fbs ball.

Not sure how UT will handle revenue sharing but the cap is $20.5M or 22% which is just crazy. If 75% of that goes to just football players that $150K per player on top of their NIL. NIL is certainly not working out as I thought it would.

Hmmm. ESPN is reporting 36 players have entered the portal from Marshall.
Marshall has opted out of Independence Bowl per ESPN.
They are seeking a 5-7 school to participate but most schools/players have gone home for semester break.

They also have to do so going down the APR rankings in order (they can't just reach out to any 5-7 school they want).

Based on APR the top 5-7 teams are:

Cincinnati (994)
Wisconsin (993)
Auburn (986)
Virginia (985)
Oregon State (976)
Michigan State (974)
Eastern Michigan (968)
Kansas (968)
New Mexico (947)
ULM (935)

There's almost no chance they go further down the list than this.

Honestly, they were able to get 5-7 Rutgers to replace Texas A&M for the 2021 Gator Bowl: A&M backed out on December 22 (due to a COVID outbreak among their team resulting in them only able to field a team of 38 players total) and the NCAA and Gator bowl had cleared Rutgers on December 23 to replace them for the December 31 bowl game.

I wouldn't worry about it; they'll have another team agreed and in place before December 28th.

So what you're saying is-if the FSU dude eats the dog poop out of a red solo cup, there's still a chance the Seminoles go to a bowl.

You have to think Fickell or Freeze know the value of the extra practices if they're in a bowl.

I have wondered how much control the NFL will assert over college football as the money continues to grow.
I figure The NFL will keep hands-off of CFB as long as CFB separates the wheat from the chaff for the draft. It is not out of the realm of possibility an NFL franchise or anyone could buy a college football program from the university someday.

Why would they do that? NFL teams are getting the milk for free.

It’s not just about getting a payday. It’s how Marshall massively mishandled not retaining a coach that just won his conference. It would’ve been one thing if they lost Huff to a P4 school, instead they lost him to a team in the same crappy conference. And it ticked off the players and they bolted. So money or not, Gibson is starting from almost scratch because of it. But if he didn’t want the hassle, he shouldn’t have signed on.
