i did that traffic mess at the very first IRL race. i can't imagine how bad it was with all those people. was the main reason i didn't go this weekend.

It would suck to drive 60 miles and never make it in the track, but also not being allowed to leave the parking lot upon arrival. That happened with one guy.

At what point do you just turn around and go home, rather than trying to get to the track.

if you miss the start of a night race, that's on you. you literally have all day to get there.

my issue is with the post race traffic, of that nobody is writing about, which i'm sure was as equally miserable, if not worse.

It took six hours to get from Louisville to Sparta. Traffic was backed up nearly 15 miles. I would usually agree about missing the start, but the entire weekend was rediculous for travelling.

It's my understanding that the option was harder than usual, but that's just what I gathered from different articles.

i don't care. they even made the point numerous times during the Busch race on Friday that if you were traveling to the race you need to give yourself additional time.

if you're not at the race track, regardless of when it starts, in time to eat breakfast, you're doing it wrong anyway.

i don't disagree that traffic was horrendous, but i also refuse to believe the 106k people at the race were going there for the first time. and Smith trying to pass the buck is a dirtbag move. it's your track; man up and take the blame.

it took us 4 hours to get from the parking lot to the highway after the IRL race years ago. no telling what time people got home last night.

Smith stated in an interview he knew there would be traffic problems well in advance, and complained to the Governor about I-71. Well if you knew about it, why did you not do something proactive about it rather than run your mouth after the fact?

no kidding, like, oh, i don't know, making sure people understood the amount of time it was going to take to get in.

or, suggesting any alternative routes. i just looked at the track website directions. it's a google map with clickable icons. there's no directions.

Bristol was horrible in the early years with just a two lane highway 11-E and one narrow, curvy road crossing near the track. Later when they started expanding the seating, the local police brought in experts in traffic control and set out a very effective plan that gets 160,000 out quicker than 30,000 did back then. Their tactics and techniques have been studied and adopted by many other tracks.

Bristol, Indianapolis and Talladega are some of the best i've been too.

Kentucky and Atlants are two of the worst.

if you know where to park, and are willing to wait an hour, you can pass a lot of cars on 11-E as you're leaving.
