Memphis would have destroyed Illinois this last season and surely a top ranked OT can get in at a top school

Yes, of course they would have. Illinois is a joke of a program. There is zero reason Northwestern should be better than Illinois at football.

There's a reason Erik hasn't received an offer since 2013 even though he's camped and UOV'd places. In 2013 he looked like an elite top tier OT and just hasn't progressed over time.

Conversely look at Ryan Johnson who's been committed to us for a long time like Erik was to Michigan. Ryan over last summer camped at places like Ole Miss and Alabama and earned scholarship offers.

There's clearly a skill gap in Ryan's favor, but rankings and offers look somewhat similar.

Erik Swenson's coach saw 'red flags' with Michigan

Supposedly his coach "saw red flags." To your point though, yes it does seem a bit strange that such a highly ranked player wouldn't garner more attention. I guess we'll see shortly.

Hopefully northwestern takes him as they are and should be pretty good with Fitz as their coach, if it isn't NW options will be slim. Illinois maybe a team like Indiana or Purdue.

Agreed, plus academically that is a great option as well.

He was a star as a HS freshman and Rivals was saying he'd be a future 5-star. He didn't progress though and apparently had a poor senior year, leading to the Michigan offer pull (he had previously committed when Hoke was still there).

Somebody wrote that this kid refused to go to an evaluation camp held by the new Michigan coaching staff. I find that hard to believe, but maybe there was a conflict, who knows. I think Harbaugh just found some prospects he liked better and dropped him.

I don't think they were holding any evaluation camps three weeks before NSD. If they had dropped him 6-8 months ago, the kid would have been taking trips, decommited much earlier, and been committed elsewhere.
