There are basically two lines of thought:QB play is the key. It literally determines the season every year. I still don't understand staying with overthrow Joe this year.
Yep, Bama and UGA can’t have 2nd string 5 star players for more than their freshman year. If they’re not playing by year 2, they will leave. It will hurt Bama and UGA to not always have 5 star backups when injuries occur. That has always been their advantage. Quality depth with experience.Yes, the rules have changed. When it was difficult for a player to transfer, players stayed longer than they would have. While some teams are still benefiting from the hoarding, it will become a thing of this past. This is why Saban doesn't like the new rules. It works against a team like them and UGA.
I think this theory makes sense, but there is no evidence that it has occurred or is occurring. Bama and UGA were 1-2 on the team talent composite this year which assesses the talent of the entire roster (we were No. 16).Yep, Bama and UGA can’t have 2nd string 5 star players for more than their freshman year. Those aren’t the only two optionsThere are basically two lines of thought:
1. Heupel is stupid and can't assess quarterbacks OR
2. Heupel was right that Nico was not ready to take over yet this year from Joe.
I fall in camp # 2, so it follows to me that maybe expecting a Heisman type season from Nico in 24' might be a bit too much. I think if he's a good solid top half of the conference type of quarterback, that will be a reasonable progression for him and we might be set up for the Heisman type jump in 25'.
It really is a good class. 91.02 average on 247. That is good enough to get you in the playoffs almost every year (after several years of this back to back to back) as long as they are developed properly. This recruiting class is great. Folks need to put things into perspective. Lets revisit the ageless quote from Bill Parcells' exit from the Patriots: " “If I’m going to be asked to cook the meal, I’d like to be able to pick the groceries.” The recruits are the groceries. CJH and staff are the Chefs. Our staff has proven they can develop talent and field a successful team. Look at it through the Texas A&M lens. Recruiting classes: 2021 - #8; 2022 - #1; 2023 - #15, This is the same team that just broke the buyout record. You can have all the prime beef ya want, but it no good burnt to a crisp.
As it has been said, we are also limited to the number of scholarships we can offer due to NCAA sanctions, thanks Cornbread! To finish as high as we did while being handicapped is a success. Go Vols!
Imo what happened is that Heupel made the (mistaken) calculation that long term it would be better for Nico and the program to wait a year and that Milton had earned a year. The Orange Bowl last year likely cemented the decision. I don’t think he actually believes Milton is better. Now it was a strategic blunder which, I think, cost us some recruiting momentum and maybe a win or two. A mobile QB would have been huge this year. That doesn’t make Heupel an idiot. Good coaches screw up and even have weak points. 2024 will be fun if Nico stays healthy.
I think Heupel knows this is a bottom line business, and he started the quarterback he thought gave us the best chance to win. Period. I understand people want to second guess him now, but I think he knows more than those people, so I think Nico just wasn't ready this year. And he didn't look ready physically.Imo what happened is that Heupel made the (mistaken) calculation that long term it would be better for Nico and the program to wait a year and that Milton had earned a year. This just doesn't comport with a coach's need for self-preservation, it does however comport with the general fan desire to believe in the most optimistic possible scenario, i.e. in this case that Heupel willingly sat a rock star on the bench all year behind a less good player and now said rock star will immediately be able to come in and work miracles in game 1 next year. I think Nico's got great potential, but I don't expect him to be Hendon Hooker next year. Hendon Hooker, despite being older and more physically developed, still needed a year as a starter in the system to really recognize his potential and I think we are likely in for another developmental year with Nico. If he can be a top half of the SEC quarterback next year, which I think he can be, that'll be a good progression for him. I'm just concerned our ever impatient fanbase is going to freak out if he's not Hendon Hooker/Jayden Daniels level next year, which seems to be what a lot of people are banking on.Imo Hype played Milton out of loyalty to him and the fact Milton seems to be very well thought of by the players, and afraid of locker room issues if Milton didnt play. Hype revamped his whole offensive scheme around Milton.
They focus too much on just the numerical rankings ... and ignore the fact that there is very little difference between being being #5 and #12 .... Now, there is a big difference between the top 3 and everyone else .... Obviously, we are not recruiting in the same realm as Georgia and Alabama.I think some focus way too much on these numbers. What matters is the results on the field.
Yep, and you never know. you stay in that top 12, and you pick up a guy that becomes the next Mayfield, Manzell or a Cam Newton type these types of college players can carry a good overall team to the top. You got to have a top 15 base and have all your areas covered and then that one guy has that season of dreams and you're set.Yup. Outside of 1-5 (nationally, not SEC only), there isn't much difference in the next 10 spots. The 6th ranked class and the 12 ranked class are a lot closer than people like to let on.
We also still have a shot to add Seaton or McKinley or both before the late signing period. And we could add Brazell or Stewart or both.
And some in these forums will crow and talk smack if we are .01 higher than another team and then turn around and say there's not much difference in a .92 disparity of a team ahead of us. It's a valid point you make imo but we also don't see alot of people on here saying our class is basically equivalent to South Carolina's. That would be a bridge too far for many I guarantee you. What's good for the goose is rarely good for the gander on these boards, that's fandom in general though, not just our fans. There is little difference between Tennessee at 11th nationally and Auburn at #6. .92? This forum will always ignorantly obsess over the numerical rankings.
That is just as true.
