I'm curious what the sacrifices would be?

For starters, many of the network sites enforce a pay model, so that's one. Another, that I mentioned above, would be not having a choice of software platform. There's a long list of things to consider, but it's not really important for the purposes of this discussion. :hi:

ESPN forums were mediocre at best for years. Just poor layout and functionality. Then they went to their new "more robust"(their own words) format.

The new format was garbage and ESPN shut the forums down a little while later.

Of all the forums I visit, this format is the most user-friendly. I visit another one that looks just like this with a different color scheme. Are they the same software?

Most that you probably see out there are phpbb software, which is free. This is vbulletin, but has similar functionality. I can't really tell you the difference between the two. I do know that the mods (modifications) I installed on my site (when I had it) were not good enough to keep the spammers and trolls out. It was a great deal of work. Freak must have some very good 'mods' in place, because the spammers are pretty much limited to human, rather than bot, initiated spam.
