KNOXVILLE — An angry Rick Clausen said yesterday that fans and media should be happy because they finally got their scapegoat.

Tell you what, Rickie, when you can keep from yawning on the sidelines and acting lik a petulant child the rest of the time, call me.

You've never mada a dime in your life and you're going to lecture us about "His job and his wife's livelihood and his daughters' livelihood were basically in my hands."

I hope Daddy Clausen can sell that condo in a down real estate market.

I wish the Clausen family could take a lesson from the Mannings about showing class. That Daddy Clausen reminds me of Juicy Locke popping off. Pray Jimmy doesn't decide to come to UT.

Now Casey was a good "college" quarterback. We actually had a decent passing game when he was here. He wasn't the brightest, but he could turn it on in the clutch. He just didn't have the physical tools to make it on the pro level.

rick is right though...he the players pretty much hold the coaches positions.....u can have all the talent in the world and great coaches but if the players make mistakes the coaches take the blame....correct? thats pretty much how it has been lately....UT has always been conservative....Randy didnt make that up......He turned 2 freshman and a 3rd stringer into winners last year....but u know what helped a lot? the players performing

i'm not happy sanders is gone, but it had to be done and i wonder now if is enough. if fulmer cannot control his players any better than this, he won't be there much longer. rick needs to focus on being a better QB and keep his mouth shut.

If he speaks to the media, he gets accused of running his mouth too much. If he doesn't talk, he'd get accused of being aloof like his brother was. The guy can't win.

As I said on another post Fulmer should have a muzzle on these guys. Frankly no one cares what Rick or anyone else thinks about Sanders. And Rick whining about it only makes him look stupid and our guys too busy dwelling on this. It's obvious that even with this change Fulmer can't get these guys focused on what they should be which is the next game.

It's not Rick Clausen's place or role to speak out on what the past brought. It brings down the team, pisses the fans off more, and gives the national media what they want...which is controversy.

So frankly Rick no one asked you what you thought. As you say if you did your job then he might still have his job. Do your job and maybe no one else will lose their livlihood.

Fulmer needs to bring the whole program under a tight leash. Frankly regardless of how you feel about Sanders or even if you agree with Clausen, he should not be out in front of cameras destroying what little dignity the program has. It goes far in making us all look like @sses and does little for recruiting or the future of the program. As someone else said if he could pass with his mouth we'd be in contention for a NC.

KNOXVILLE — An angry Rick Clausen said yesterday that fans and media should be happy because they finally got their scapegoat.

]"He said (Monday) the offense was his ship," Clausen said of Sanders. "Yeah, it's his ship, but I felt like as the quarterback of this football team I was first in command. And I feel like I let him down.

"If people want to blame somebody, then they can blame me."

"We're the ones people come to watch," Clausen said. "There are 100,000 people in that stadium every Saturday to watch us. They don't watch the coaches make calls.

"They watch us go out and play, and we haven't put on a good show at all this year."

It didn't make it any easier for Clausen when he heard fans chanting "Fire Sanders" at the conclusion of the South Carolina game.

"They should have been saying, 'Take out Rick Clausen,' " he said. "Because I played awful and I ultimately cost that man his job.

"That's a horrible feeling to have. There's not enough I can say, and not enough respect I can show the man."

IMO, rick is an example of whats wrong with this team. I think this team has character issues. Fulmer doesnt put enough emphasis on building character on his team. You lead by example, you dont blame the fans for your o.c. resigning.

There are many stories out there about players with legendary coaches like bear bryant. About how much they respected their coach, how much they learned from their coach, about football and life.

Great coaches inspired their players to get the most from them. They inspired them to do their best on and off the field. Players tried not to embaress their coach on or off the field, simply out of respect.

I dont feel Fulmer is creating that kind of atmosphere. Players think at UT they can get away with things. As a result they are getting in trouble.

I dont believe a general neyland coached team, would have as many problems this team has off the field. i dont think his players would make angry comments in front of the media disparaging the fans, simply out of respect for their coach. But this is a problem throughout college football, though Fulmer has more problems then other coaches do.

Why shouldn't he blame the fans??? The fans know nothing about that team... He's there, he knows what's going on. Let him say what he wants. I'm sure the rest of the team feels the same way that he does.

Huh??? Blame the fans for what? The fans can see there are problems with the team when they are out on the field making stupid mistakes one after another and when players are getting into trouble on and off the field. Fans are smarter than you think. Fans have a right to expect a good football program and a head coach that takes the reins and controls all aspects of the program. The old adage "don't fix anything if nothing is wrong" is a good philosophy to live by. However, the counter to that adage is "fix a problem early before it becomes a bigger problem and develops into more problems" is a philosophy that CPF has not intelligently used lately, if ever. The head coach needs to look in the mirror and see if he has done his job as a head coach. He is ultimately responsible for the success and failure of the program, not the fans.
