Interesting that a team with a poor offense and great defense that is a few plays away from being 5-2 or even 6-1 is thought as bad.......
While a team that has a great offense and poor defense that had played a similarly tough schedule would be thought of as a good team with a few bad breaks.
Just something to think about.
Matter of fact, let's pick a team that has not even played as tough a schedule, but is 8-0.
They have at least 4 wins that could have been losses....
21-17 over Washington
47-40 over California
44-41 over Washington State in overtime
30-27 over Stanford in overtime
UCLA is ranked 5th in the country and is also 8-0. There opponents are 23-29. Tennessee's are 32-13. According to the BCS SOS (formerly used) formula, UT is 2nd and UCLA is 59th in SOS.
Contrasting Tennessee, UCLA is 5th in the nation in scoring offense (UT is 108), 26th in total offense (UT is 99), 88th in total defense (UT is 12) and 75th in scoring defense (UT is 9). Not to mention they play in the Pac10.
But alas, its all in the wins and losses anyways.
Here's another one. Arizona is 4-4. Was leading USC for most of its game as well as LSU. Is 5th in total offense and 8th in scoring offense but is 106 in total defense and 85 in scoring defense.
Northwestern is 5-3, is 4th in total offense and 10th in scoring offense but only 117 in total defense (last) and 100 in scoring defense. Arizona State beat them 52-21.
After UCONN gave up 45 points last night, Tennessee is now the only unranked team in the top 10 scoring defenses in the NCAA IA.
1. Va Tech
2. Alabama
3. Miami
4. Auburn
5. Georgia
6. Florida
7. LSU
8. Tennessee
8. Boston College
10. Penn State
And if you are wondering, Notre Dame is ranked 60th in scoring defense giving up 25.3 points per game.
