I think that Cal will suprise UT and pull the upset. What do yall think the lines on the games will be. SC will pound the razorbacks. I can't wait for October when Bama puts a whippin' on the orange in Neyland.
Cal will be favored.

I'm guessing the opening line will be Cal by 10. It may shrink but it probably won't get any larger.
I'll guess Cal by five is the line.

I see us completely demolishing Cal. A blowout. At least 40 points on em.
we can't put 40 on a naia team....I'm as big of a fan as anyone but that's just not our game...

Believe it or not, almost half our games in 2004, we scored 35+ points (six games). I know last season was last season, but 2004 was a mere two seasons ago, and the offense was pretty damn good that season. Except against Auburn.

1. Cal wont surprise anyone. We already know they are good and we will likely be the underdog in this game. We are out to surprise people and do a complete 360 from 2005.

2. Correct. Arkansauce will get drilled

3. If your offense from last year scored 3 on us, and you return 1 good RB and one decent WR, a new QB and the O-line that gave up 5 sacks to Tennessee, 7 to LSU and 11 to Auburn, how do you expect to win at Neyland? Promise you this, 'Ol Phil has this game circled in red b/c he will be out for blood. He will have his guys ready to play, ready to win.

Its a given we will be underdog in this game, but its a stage set just for the Vols. A win here against a very good Cal team will bring back the confidence for the team and give closure to last season to bury it. We lose this game and the meltdown lives on, IMO thats how the national view will be. Yes its a non-conference game and if we lose the world does'nt end and it doesnt affect the SEC standings, but the Vols have to win this game for the sake of the rest of the season because a loss here will breed losses later in the schedule, we must turn the page and bury last season in THIS game. Thats why I think this is a huge game.

Easily put, I think Tennessee can afford to lose EITHER the Cal game, or Florida, but not both.

If they lose to Cal and Florida, it will be a long season....by long, I mean 2-3 more losses.

With so many question marks about UTs front seven (not everyone in the media thinks it is a given that Chavis will have these guys ready to play), and with the uncertainity of Ainge's play I still think the line could be higher.

Cal is going to throw the ball at least 50 times if not 60. I could be wrong, but I still think the opening line will be high.

Now I don't claim to be a college football expert at all, but that seems pretty ridiculous to me. If Cal is planning to throw the ball 50 or 60 times, then they must be pretty darn stupid. Why would a team with an unproven QB and a heisman candidate at RB throw the ball 50 or 60 times? Especially when the opposing defense's strong point is the secondary. UT is replacing 6 of its starting front 7 from last year. If Cal ends up throwing the ball 50 or 60 times, they will lose.

This is what Tedford does....no matter how ridiculous it may seem to you.

If the opening line is Cal -10, the books won't be able to write tickets on UT fast enough. The gambling public will flood them with money on the Vols.

Your right on that. But what will make it an upset is that the higher ranked team will lose.

I think there are several factors that will make UT win this game.

1. I think UT's D will surprise the Cal O and match them at all levels. Our Front will not be as down as some think. The way that Chief rotates the line makes sure that these guys are ready to step up at any given point. UT rotates the hell out of the D line. Pluse I think that our Ends could wind up being very special. Our LB's will have talent but they will be the only question in my mind on the D come game day.

2. I think our O will be improved and will be enough to score on the Cal D. We will run the ball quite a bit and do so well enough to win. The running game will actually help out our passing game quite a bit this game.

3. The first game of the year is always a tough one. Especially when you think about a team coming from West coast time to Eastern. Then throw in the heat and the crowd and it will be a very tough game for Cal's O. The O is always the tougher side of the game to get gel early in the season. I think our D will eat them up!

It won't be a high scoring game but I think we will win it due to our D and an improved passing game.

I have no great revelation as to how/why/when/where on the field UT will smack Cal around. But, I do know that over the years the UT season is based solely on its preseason ranking. Never have we had a top 5 preseason and rarely a top 10 rank, yet play up to that and finish the season in same category. We are a program that is very sensitive to preseason rankings and how we psycologically react to them. forget all the analysis. Forget all the rhetoric. Based on this years preseason ranking, or where it will be, go buy a can opener sharpener cause we'll be opening up a lot of whoop ass.

I think we played commensurate with ranking in '95,'96, and '97.

I wasn't advancing a position. It's just that anytime I see the terms "never" or "always" it tends to motivate me to examine the situation closely.

Statistically speaking, Cal was worse at passing than Tennessee last season (Cal was rated 90th in the NCAA, while Tennessee was 85th)..... and that was against pass poor defenses in the PAC-10. Cal offensive strength is in their running game. I would be very very surprised to see Cal throw the ball more than 25 times in this game...... unless of course they are behind by a large margin and trying to play catchup :biggrin2: .

The most passes that Cal attempted in a game last season was 40. They completed 14, in a loss to Oregon State (5-6).
