I think that's a viable criticism. I also think it's so he wouldn't get in foul trouble.

Yeah, I should have been more clear in my original post re: the effort comment. He gives great effort on the boards, and like Goobie said, for a guy who is fairly limited offensively, he does well for himself on that end.

If he works harder to get better positioning defensively (versus reaching), it should lead to less fouls. This is perhaps a conditioning issue too. He works so hard on the boards and to get open in the paint offensively that perhaps his perceived momentary lack of effort defensively comes from being tired at times.

Totally agree. What we return and who we have committed have me excited. I'm ready for Martin to get over the hump and prove he's worthy of coaching a big program.
Mark it down.
The Martin head hunters will be out in force if we don't make at least the Ch game in the BFA.
Personally I expect a slow start until the new additions get into sync, play lights out defense and realize they can dominate outside in. about 10 games in is my prediction.
But I'm a Nancy.

You want them firing away from outside? I would think we should be going inside out, not the other way around.

I feel the same but I do think this is a make or break season for CCM. Barring injuries, there's too much tallent to not have a great season. If CCM doesn't demonstrate his leadership this season, then it will be time for him to move on and the AD to invest in a proven coach.

I agree it's time to put up or shut up with this roster. I think it's unfair to label either of his first two seasons as failures though, even if fans had hoped for better.

Finishing tied for 2nd in the conference when picked to finish 11th his first season is good enough for me in the wake of the end of the Pearl era, and the damage resulting from that ugly divorce.

His second season was ripe for improvement and a tourney run, but takes a major hit losing your core player, and senior leader from the year before. I don't care if he had all year to adjust. You just don't replace your leader on the floor, who also happens to be one of your most skilled players as well.

This season he has a team made up of mostly "his" players, so I think barring major injury/personnel issues, there should be no excuse for missing the tourmament. He has the talent, and a very manageable schedule.

Should have been selected in the tourney last year, but I digress.

Maybe I've got it backwards.
I was speaking of ball movement from the perimeter to the big guys. outside in.
inside out would be the big guys distributing to set perimeter guys.
I'm looking for a dominant front court game.

Can anyone who resorts to juvenile, nonsensical terms like “ish” expect his critique of another poster to be taken seriously? I merely pointed out the writer’s harshest indictment of the team to save everyone else the trouble of searching for it. After all, my moniker is Special Ed, not Sister Mary Sunshine. That mantle doesn’t suit me and doubtless ever will. I’m a realist, not a cockeyed optimist and I like to keep up with all things Vol even while serving in the Middle East, as I am now. Pointing out information germane to the team and its prospects for the future does not make me, or anyone else who deigns to do so, a “bad poster”. Personally, I’d rather have a light shone on the deficiencies so that they can be brought out into the open. Keeping quiet about any negative aspects of a player’s habits and pretending they don’t exist will not make them go away. If they’re brought out into the open, they can be corrected. Like any other Vol fan, I want this team to be the best it can be. That will not happen as long as any one starter is not pulling his load.

Say what?

Yeah, it's just a terminology thing. Usually when you want your center and power forward to dominate, you call it inside out because you want the inside game going first and then the outside game can follow from the dominance inside. I see where you're coming from with the ball movement perspective, it's just that it's generally spoken about with the part of the game you want to emphasize first.

I think many on the VN board would prefer a board like Rolltide where you can't criticize players or coaches.
Those who criticize or disagree with the dominants are Nancies or Glasses half full.
I enjoy most of your posts. But, I like keeping up with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

You seem to be one of the most level headed posters on here. We all would prefer to go undefeated this season.

We still will have trouble against tall defenders because of height issues with our low post players. If the new guys can stretch the defense enough then we can have a stellar season.

Combine that slow start at the BFA with the first game on the road at Xavier. I really don't like playing that game first. We could easily see another uphill battle throughout the season. Getting out of the gates early at Xavier, IMO, makes that the most important game this season.

It will be nice to be able to sit back and enjoy the season knowing that we are not fighting to be on the bubble and hearing throughout the year about CCM ability to coach or not able to coach.

We won't have trouble there. Having two legit threats in the post will do wonders.

Been saying this for months. Obviously first game of the year isn't most win, but this is as close to a must win as there is IMO. Not only will it solidify this team as a true top 25 team, but it will get the road monkey off their back early and will also hopefully give them alot of confidence heading to the Bahamas.
