1. USC
Doubt USC's dominance? Cue up the first half of that 55-19 smashing of Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, then get back to us.

2. Texas
QB Vince Young and RB Selvin Young will rack up yardage. But to win the Big 12 and beyond, the 'Horns need help from the passing game.

3. Michigan
Michigan is again loaded at wideout with Steve Breaston and Jason Avant. But the best chance to stop this team is to shut down running back Mike Hart.

4. Virginia Tech
The wait is over. The Marcus Vick Era has begun. Vick still has to win over Hokie Nation, however.

5. Ohio State
Expect the Buckeyes to lean heavily on true freshman Maurice Wells, who rushed for 5,955 yards and 55 TDs in his high school career.

6. Tennessee
For a team with BCS aspirations, ranking 98th in kickoff returns and 104th on punt returns is laughable. But CB "Inky" Johnson may stave off further embarrassment.

7. Miami
You'll hear this a time or two (or more) this year. Don't kick it to Devin Hester, especially on punt returns.

8. Florida
Chris Leak has shown he's a great passer. Give him time in the pocket, and he'll pick you apart with those receivers.

9. LSU
LSU is going to have to throw the ball to have success. Right now, that means opposing secondaries have the advantage.

10. Oklahoma
If they're going to make another BCS run, you'd figure settling of a QB would be a top priority. Then again, how hard is it to turn and hand off to Adrian Peterson?

11. Iowa
A young defensive line could be a key for Iowa. All four starters from the line are gone, and their replacements had zero sacks and nine tackles last year.

12. Louisville
Quarterback Brian Brohm's potential is why Louisville has been tapped to top the Big East, despite losing six players to the NFL draft.

13. Purdue
Purdue's five losses last year were by a total of 14 points. That needs to change this season.

14. Georgia
Georgia's wideouts are unproven, which means the heat will be on quarterback D.J. Shockley.

15. Florida State
If he were at any other school, senior RB Leon Washington would be a Heisman candidate. Instead, he'll split carries with Lorenzo Booker.

16. Texas A&M
Coach Dennis Franchione knows what he wants: a multiple offense, an aggressive defense and toughness on both sides. He's still working on the last two.

Others receiving votes: Cal, Texas Tech, Boise State, Boston College, Arizona State, NC State, Bowling Green, Virginia, Alabama, Oregon, Penn State, Wyoming.

We are not going to make the BCS because our return game is not that highly ranked? Yep, I knew there was some reason we lost to Auburn twice I just didn't realize that was it.

They were talking about what happened last year... It was a compliment if you read it fully, they are putting stock in the prediction that Inky will make us a very good return team.

Milo, don't try to put your "I love ESPN" spin on it. :p :p

In no way can using the words laughable and embarrassment when describing our team be taken as a compliment.

They were also talking about last season... And I don't know how even the most hardcore of Vol fans could call last season's returning anything else.

They were just saying this season should be better. And I think it will be. I'm counting on the coaches to get it straightened out.

Absolutely.... :clapping:

Whatever... If they were hating on us that much, they'd have Florida ranked ahead of us, and probably LSU too. I know that just about everybody working there has been pushing the hell out of Florida and LSU this season.

I just think if they want to rip us I could think of better ways to do it. Bringing up return rankings as a reason that we may not make the BCS is laughable and an embarrassment to the network.

I'll agree with you there, especially on Florida.

With the kind of football we play, I'd call the return game one of the highest priorities there should be. Isn't it in Neyland's Maxims?

Well, it's true that our return game was bad....but they didn't have to go as far as to call it an embarrassment and laughable. They certainly didn't do that for any of the other teams they listed....

The kicking game is. But that would include field goals, punts, and kickoffs in my opinion. The return game is only a part of that.

What I'm most shocked at is that they didn't put LSU and/or Florida ahead of us.

Naw, I think they're wary of the new coach thing. Frankly, I'm surprised we're even ranked in the top 16, with the enduring confusion at QB.

Say fellas, let me make a disclaimer: I mean no offense. I just want to point out as non biased as I can that every team thinks that the big networks like ESPN always bad mouth them. I was over at Tigerforums a week or so ago, and there was a thread there about ESPN never giving LSU love, because they're too busy heaping love on the Darlings of the SEC East, UT.

Now, I don't mean to say that the thread had any credibility to it, but this usually seems like a genuinely intelligent board. Surely you must realize that everyone feels like they're underappreciated, and frequently overshadowed by rivals. (Competent rivals at least.) Ya know?

Again, nothing personal. I'm just trying to maintain an honest, independent assessment.

Great post, Atreus. That there is a perfect explanation of one of my truths with ESPN.

For those of us that have been FANS FOR YEARS, we understand the bias that ESPN and some of it'semployees have toward Tennessee. It's the same kind that Spencer (eye-makeup) Tillman and the other ******* that sits next to him have against us on CBS.

There is a big reason that the media has it in for Fulmer and company, and that is because of the assumption that Fulmer chased off Majors. Majors was a very well liked coach in the media. When Fulmer came on board, the media had less access and Fulmer was much more tight-lipped. The media took the side of the coach and the University and the new head coach, Fulmer were left in the cold.

It takes a lot worse than that to get one.

Who do you think we are? TideFans.com?

:birgits_giggle: Yeah well, truthfully, that's the kind of touchiness with which I'm used to dealing. (Girlfriend's are a pain.)

Tigerforums.com is a good site. A lot like this one. Although, admittedly, you guys treat me probably more courteously than some of my fellow fans treat polite rivals. But generally, maintain a friendly attitude, and they're real cool. There are even some AU posters there who were classy after they beat us last season.

Sure, I agree. I'm just saying that a lot of university's have good reasons to complain. It's just the way the ball bounces, I think.

They just kiss the butt of whoever is winning at the time, and who is the most exciting to watch. And the New York Yankees.

If ESPN wants to look for something embarrassing and laughable, they might want to consider the RAW DEAL Auburn got. Going Undefeatable in a real football conference and not even getting considered for the National Championship, now that is Laughable.

Their comments about our return game do carry some merit. Face it, we "stunk up the place". It has to be better this year, in realilty it can't be any worse.

The General believe that games are won and lost with the kicking game and I agree. Just think, what could have been if we had averaged 5-10 more yards on each punt and kickoff return. The 10-3 record might have been 12-1 or even 13-0.

That must also be the reason we had such a tough time, as "underdogs" with A&M in the Cotton Bowl. I thought it was their dominating offense that gave us such a fit. Look how they ran the score up on us, now that was embarrassing. This is, of course, not to mention how their overpowering defense reduced our offense to only winning by about 30 points.

Had we had a less "laughable" return game, as ESPN called it, just think how that game could have gone. Maybe 75-7???????

Sometimes sports commentators don't need to act like they are as "wise as a tree full of owls". Also, sometimes people actually get paid to look and act like fools. "This better to lbe thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove people right."

Go figure!
