ESPN Rates Tennessee third best team in 1998…

98 D gave up 14.5 per game. They gave up 50 points the first 2 weeks (Syracuse & UF), then 24 to Ark and 21 to UK (who lost by 37) were the most opponents scored all season.

I was only 8 when we on the championship so someone please tell me… what there any confusion about who the best was? They said we were THIRD in the AP and pretty much that Ohio State was robbed… and to top it off Kansas State was better. Am I missing something? Lol. I’m posting this to ask, for anyone who was older when we won the Championship have they ever heard this before?

Fortunately, the proof is on the field. ESPN is trying to look for any reason to get a rise out of UT Fans.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves in all of sports… The idiotic idea that KSU losing the B12 title game helped Tennessee get into the title game. It simply isn’t anywhere close to reality. Tennessee had been #1 in both the AP and BCS and #2 in the coaches for over a month. There was a zero percent chance we got left out regardless of what happened in the B12. All KSU losing did was make us have to play a tougher opponent in the championship game. Thanks I guess…

Also… Even though I’d disagree, I’ll at least listen to an argument that on paper OSU was a better team. The idea that KSU was better is one of the more asinine things I may have ever heard in my life.

Ignant Espn....

Zero question UT was the best team in '98. FSU (with Wienke healthy) was #2. 'Ole "Rooster" was really their 3rd string QB at the begining of the season.

Think if the games were played on neutral field the 98 gators were much better than OSU and K state. Outgained us by like 300 yards and led FSU for most of the game in Tallahassee until a bad quarter of football cost them that game. IMO the gator team that year was one of spurrier’s best.

98 Florida didn't quite have it at qb. That rotation stuff was weird. Travis Taylor as a number one receiver was a step down from Doering Jackson Anthony & Hilliard from 93-97. That was not nearly the best Gator team under CSS.

Dear ESPN hack who wrote this drivel: please read what the book of Revelations says will happen to liars. Have fun in the flames, m’kay?

We were undefeated, untied, and won all the games we were supposed to win to claim the title. No one else did that. We earned it on the field of play and they didn't. NO one, not Brent Musberger, not ESPN, can ever take that away from us.

The only guy that had our number all season was Donovan McNabb.
That tOSU team was amazing. Lots of talent everywhere. They should have won their way to the BCS Championship game. UCLA was decent.

KSU was very good. I watched them play all season and was impressed, but they folded at the end, losing to two inferior opponents.
I guess those were "their" choke jobs, they were solid.
Michael Bishop had a Tebow-type season, 2844yds passing, 23TDs and 5 Ints, 748 yds rushing 14TDs. He accounted for 37 TDs. Only Tebow's sophomore season was better.

Outside of UT, I thought tOSU was the second best team. They crushed everyone, except Saban coached the sweater vest off of John Cooper in that MSU game.

I disagree. People act like Chris Weinke was an All-American quarterback. He was literally a 50% passer with no mobility. I vividly remember the leadup to the game and ESPN hyping up Marcus Outzen as well as gushing over how unstoppable Peter Warrick was. Did it hurt them not having Weinke? Of course, but I don't think it was the difference in the game. Also, FSU was favored in that game by almost a touchdown without Weinke.
I remember Goodrich having Warrick clamped before pulling his hammy. To me it didn't matter who their QB was at the time it was all about stopping Warrick. It was pretty simple back then. Stop Warrick and u win the game. Imo Weinke's Heisman should have went to Warrick.

FSU being without Chris Weinke was the difference in that game. They were actually down to their 3rd string Qb. Jamal Lewis wasn’t as big of a loss for us because Travis Henry was his back up. We had a great team that year and a lot of luck along the way. Glad we won.

Weinke was not very good in 1998. He threw a bunch of interceptions (I think 4?) in their loss to NC State early in the season. Outzen played better than Weinke that year. Outzen really wasn’t that bad in the national championship game either. The Goodrich interception wasn’t really Outzen’s fault. It was obvious they were trying to get the ball to Warrick, and Goodrich telegraphed the play perfectly. That interception was on bad coaching, not poor decision-making.

Also, to say that losing Jamal Lewis wasn’t that big of a deal because we had Travis Henry as a back up, well, injuries are part of the game and depth matters. We had amazing depth at running back. Henry didn’t even play that well against FSU. He hardly gained any yards, he threw a terrible pass to a wide open TE on a trick play that should have been an easy TD, and he fumbled twice. Travis Stephens actually ran the ball better, much better, than Henry in the Fiesta Bowl. To sum up, Tennessee had the better depth. Better depth means better players. Better players means better team.

Warrick was not in college football when Weinke won the Heisman. Weinke won the Heisman in 2000. Warrick’s senior year was ‘99. Warrick would have won the Heisman that year if he didn’t get caught stealing clothes and got suspended for a couple of games. Instead, Ron Dayne won the Heisman in ‘99.

This is documented proof of ESPN being totally ignorant and irrelevant as well.
Their opinion means nothing………….
