LOL. I've always known the ESPY's to be a complete joke, but come on. A bunch of losers got riled up over some fake racism crap and now they are brave? I hate society.

They should be careful to not encourage behavior that ultimately could affect them greatly. Should other collegiate teams decide to "strike" over whatever social or pay issues they see necessary in the future, gonna be a lot of ESPN dead air come fall.

I think there are folks at Mizzou who will be offended by ESPN's award. That whole event has cost the university around $35M due to enrollment being down.

A lot of the stuff on their boards seem to indicate their fans don't really want this award / attention for this either.

I also saw someone making a point on an SEC message board of how ESPN probably benefits/benefited from this story more than they did.

Agreed. They don't belong. I would have rather seen a Virginia Tech or even a Louisville added.

Louisville never really had a chance, though. The whole basis of the conference realignment was to to bring in larger, higher population media markets in states that were new and previously unoccupied by the SEC, with the goal being to drive up the amount of TV money a network like ESPN would be paying the conference to have the rights for the major local college teams' games (over the footprint states/areas).

Unfortunately, Virginia Tech nixed/killed any idea of their joining the conference (repeatedly, actually) during the beginning of the SEC's search for a potential 14th team.

The likely only other option in that round of conference expansion was West Virginia, and had the SEC gone that route, the schools would also be getting a lot less yearly money from the SEC Network TV contract with ESPN.(and as a side effect, South Carolina would have played for another SEC Championship)

In what year would SC have played in another SEC title game ? West Virginia was pretty good in 2012

The 2013 season

Wikipedia - 2013 Southeastern Conference Football Season

And not really as far as the Mountaineers go:

Wikipedia - 2012 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Team

The 2012 West Virginia team went 7-5 in the regular season and lost to Syracuse in the bowl season. They started the season 5-0, but then after 2 games of conference play they quickly bottomed out and fell off the map - without anything like major injuries - and honestly were lucky enough to be playing Kansas and Iowa State near the end to have a winning season, let alone make a bowl game. Since then they have gone 4-8 in 2013, 7-5 in the 2014 regular season, and 7-5 in last year's regular season.

(Plus either way, the teams in the conference would still have been getting a lot less yearly TV money from the SEC Network contract with ESPN had the conference gone that route.)
