The 2013 season

Wikipedia - 2013 Southeastern Conference Football Season

And not really as far as the Mountaineers go:

Wikipedia - 2012 West Virginia Mountaineers Football Team

The 2012 West Virginia team went 7-5 in the regular season and lost to Syracuse in the bowl season. They started the season 5-0, but then after 2 games of conference play they quickly bottomed out and fell off the map - without anything like major injuries - and honestly were lucky enough to be playing Kansas and Iowa State near the end to have a winning season, let alone make a bowl game. Since then they have gone 4-8 in 2013, 7-5 in the 2014 regular season, and 7-5 in last year's regular season.

(Plus either way, the teams in the conference would still have been getting a lot less yearly TV money from the SEC Network contract with ESPN had the conference gone that route.)

that 2012 was actually the 2011 team in the 2012 orange bowl -- havent been much good since then and surprised they didnt ax the coach this past season

His leukemia?

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer of the blood which is completely manageable. He had been diagnosed months before "resigning". If you don't think he was pushed out after willfully using his team to oust a school president then you're not thinking it through.

You're assuming the standings shake out the same except for USC moving up a spot. If UGA plays WVU instead and wins rather than playing Mizzou and losing, they're 6-2 and hold the tiebreaker over USC and they're in ATL. Way too many what-ifs to declare how the standings would've ended up.

Well, not necessarily. That's pretty damn dismissive on your part. People do die of this, you know, and they would probably be at least a bit peevish to know that you consider it "completely manageable."

My guess is that he was dealing with a potentially life-threatening diagnosis, wanted to keep working (the Type A thing and all); probably had family members begging him to resign and be with them. Then all this other blew up, on top of everything else, distracting from the football program he had been building, and he just said (pick 1) It's a Sign from Above or Eff It, I'm outta here.

But I doubt that my psychic abilities are any better or worse than yours. :hi:
