Which has been the norm under Cal. Davis going down would have killed last years front court as well. Saying UK has no depth this year is like saying the sky is usually blue. Duh.

You had serviceable backups....harrow isn't right you're playing a walkon. This years UK team is the thinnest team Cal has ever had and that was my point preseason.

We should have still been able to do fine without a ton of backups. This team can never play well together. No one ever shows up the same day. But your point is true.

All this POST NOEL crap is getting on my nerves. It isn't like they don't have a 4-5 star player on the bench to take his place. KY's defense is what is killing them. Noel erasing those mistakes is a great thing but don't cover up the real problem with the loss of Noel. BTW KY signed the #1 center in 2010, #3 Center 2011, and #1 and #15 center in 2012 (Per Scout).

Man, you read my mind. When you have HS All Americans scattered all up and down your lineup I don't want to hear that crap about Noel not playing.
Good post.

You clearly haven't watched these High School All-Americans this year.

ding ding ding! We have a winner!

I mentioned that preseason as well but you blew it off. Cal has always had upperclassmen who became key contributors, I'm curious if he has any next year.

Mays has possibly been your alls most consistent player, hard to imagine where they'd be withou him.

Okay, then what 4-5 star player took Noel's place? Poythress? Wiltjer? Stein? If you've watched even one game of UK, you'd know those three don't even come close to Noels level.

Lost to Baylor at home with Noel. Pretty "inconsistent"

Living in Kentucky, I can lay claim to having watched the majority of your team's games this year.

I have one question that you as a fan may be able to answer, but that I can't figure out.

Why is/was Archie Goodwin rated so highly? I see the talent with Poythress and Cauley. And to an extent I see it with Goodwin, too, but in some NBA mocks he's projected top 10-15. And I simply don't understand why. He has no jump shot, and while he can take the ball to the hole, he is incredibly one dimensional in doing so. If he takes it to the hole, it is to score, and almost never to pass. He also never seems to make the right decision in transition. I swear I've seen him with the ball on a 3-on-1 and barrel right into the single defender for a charge more times than I can count this year. He gets out of control very easily and very often.

(Edit: forgot to talk about defense. I guess he has good length, but he has never stood out to me defensively.)

This is just one man's observation. I know he's just a kid developing and trying to get better, just like any freshman. I also haven't seen as many games of late as I did early on in the year.

Maybe I'm completely off base? Your thoughts?

I agree with what you said. I think the draft this year is going to be very low on true "stars". There will be a lot of role players but not a lot of standouts. This is why Goodwin is going to draft well this year. It's just a low year for talent. (overall).

A great point, but still when I look at some of the names below him I am still left wondering.

One mock I'm looking at right now (from late Feb) has him going 9th, ahead of Trey Burke, Poythress, Olynyk, Plumlee, Otto Porter, KCP, and more. And I just see that and can't help but shake my head.

He's behind a lot of those guys now, definitely Otto Porter. But strength, athleticism and driving ability go a long way in the NBA. I'd take him over Plumlee and Olynyk, especially considering the age difference.

In high school he probably could just bully his way into the paint and score easier. He can shoot sometimes, just needs to work on it. Like you said, he needs to learn to pass more. He averages 3.1 TOs a game and allows himself to get caught up in the moment. But he's a freak athletically and at times can take over the game for us.

That's not my point. They have taken 4 of the top centers available over the past 3 years. They DO have players with ALOT of talent. Noel was a difference maker for sure. But you can't blame their loses on losing one player. They have had the #1 recruiting class in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and will have the #1 class in 2013 (13 5* Players :crazy:per Scout). Losing ONE player is no excuse for not making the tourney or even being on the bubble. KY has no excuse with talent like that.

Yeah, fair enough. You can see that athleticism, that much is apparent.

That's about what I figured. For his own sake I hope he stays. I'm rooting for him (as soon as he leaves :)) and would like to see him succeed in the NBA. I gained a lot of respect for him after seeing the passion he showed in that post-game interview Thursday. That was great.

A solid point; I guess he's just too one-dimensional for my liking. At least right now.

Again, everyone from the 2009 and 2010 classes is gone. The fact that Enes Kanter was a highly ranked center is completely irrelevant to this Kentucky team.

All this talk about KY. Who cares? They will dig their own hole. If the Vols are matched with them in the finals, tell me you would favor them over TN. I think not.
