There's not going to be much compassion on this board for the homeless.

when I see figures like that all I can say is hurray for foriegn aid, obviously foriegners are closer to the heart of YOUR elected officials than you are living in a cardboard box.

They are pretty bad in ATL. I offer food to most that hit me up for change. They rarely take it. I refuse to support someone's crack/alcohol addiction.

One difference, people in 3rd world countries aren't doing it by choice. I don't know the percentage of homeless that are doing it by choice but think it is much higher than you would believe. :unsure:

There are some people who chose to live off the grid due to crushing debt (child support, back taxes, etc.) or outstanding warrants but I imagine the number of people who would just wake up and say to themselves "Hey, This sounds like a lifestyle I want to try", is pretty minimal.

3 million out of 300 million...I can sleep very well at night with those figures.

I would be interested to know the definition of "homeless" used for this study.

I've heard of one study where recently graduated college students who had not yet found a new place of their own and who weren't going home to their parents were considered "homeless".

If they want sympathy just come out and say illegals took their homes and jobs. THEN they'll get an entire group rallying around them.

HUD #'s are much lower and are based on the following definition. They estimate about 750,000.

Generally speaking, homeless individuals and families are those who are sleeping in places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks, and abandoned buildings, or those who are sleeping in an emergency shelter as a primary nighttime residence. Persons may also be considered homeless if they:

 • are living in transitional or supportive housing for homeless persons but originally came from streets or emergency shelters;
 • ordinarily sleep in transitional or supportive housing for homeless persons but are spending a short time (30 consecutive days or less) in a hospital or other institution;
 • are being evicted within a week from private dwelling units and no subsequent residences have been identified and they lack resources and supportive networks needed to obtain access to housing;
 • or are being discharged within a week from institutions in which they have been residents for more than 30 consecutive days and no subsequent residences have been identified and they lack the resources and support networks needed to obtain access to housing.

Most people are homeless because they think that people have given up on them so they give up on themselves. That's one of the problems with this country, is people having pride in one's self to get what they want and what they need, instead it is being replaced with entitlements and welfare. Very sad IMO.

Really? And how many of the homeless did you interview to come to that conclusion?

The HUD data shows about 170,000 that are chronically homeless.

About 131,000 are severly mentally ill and about 180,000 are chronic substance abusers.

Like in the case with the uninsured (medically), homelessness is a transient (no pun intended) condition for many.

McDonald's in Sevierville is hiring!

I know you are sort of kidding, but this is the thing right here. If you are down and out...lost your professional job, can't get another one like it, no one will hire you at lower management levels because you are over qualified, etc. and you have bills to pay........there is nothing wrong with taking the job at McDonalds. I know if I was out of work for any length of time, I wouldn't hesitate to take such a job. Some people laugh, some look down on you, but guess what.......you can get health ins at McDonalds, you can pay the rent, utitlities, cable..etc and go to the grocery store. Those jobs are out there....many homeless can't get them, but they probably could have before they became homeless.

And McDonalds isn't going to close.....ever. Job security!:)

Let's put it this way. Say you get fired from your job, lose all your savings, your house. You have nothing. You don't have ANY friends or family that would help you out? No one that will let you sleep on their floor? What does that say about you? My $.02
