How do you see it?? You are quick to point out what you believe are flaws in someone else's logic without providing your own first.

You attempted to speak for an entire group with whom I would venture to say you have had little contact, there was not logic to it. I won't provide my take on the feelings of the homeless, because I have not talked in depth with enough of them to come to any conclusions about their collective frame of mind.

Let's put it this way. Say you get fired from your job, lose all your savings, your house. You have nothing. You don't have ANY friends or family that would help you out? No one that will let you sleep on their floor? What does that say about you? My $.02

I understand what you are saying, but that is also not the norm.

Clearly there are homeless that need help - the severely mentally ill for example. These people need more than direct assistance.

Clearly there are homeless that are in that situation temporarily. Direct assistance may quicken the transition out of the situation.

Clearly there are homeless that are drug/alcohol abusers. Direct assistance won't change this.

As in the case with many of our social programs, there are those that need the help and those that become dependent on the help.

What is the norm?

I don't know, I am sure that on some level there is a pattern and similarities between cases, but I would say that by and large the homeless are from all walks of life and there are many different reasons they ended up that way. In short, I don't know that there is a "norm"

I'd say by and large those that are homeless for more than a couple of months have mental issues and/or drug and alcohol problems. That doesn't mean they don't deserve help.

I keep using the HUD data since that's the only info I've seen but their numbers suggest that about 1/3 - 1/2 of the total # of homeless fit this description.

I agree there is not a norm. Accordingly, solutions need to be wide ranging and acknowledge that there will always be some in a country of 300 million that slip through the cracks.

What do you think it is?

My guess would be that the majority of homeless people are sick(mentally or physically) or drug addicted in some manner. I also doubt there are 3 million homeless people in this country.

I do too, 1 million wouldn't surprise me, 3 is a little steep however. The actual figure is probably much closer to the HUD numbers.

as one other said what do they count as homeless? Is lack of a permanent residence make you homeless? If I sleep on my buddies couch for a couple of months while i'm unemployed am i considered homeless? :dunno:

The HUD definition is provided in the link. Not sure what other definitions exist.

I was homeless a lot of nights in college. I had no idea where I woke up half the time.
