European football teams dream of 39,000

Sorry if I've offended anybody, but calling ecuadorians midgets and weak is well... I'll say it again racist and ignorant. As for the rest of you guys, chill out... I know I need too. Going to bed now, and that's very good advice. All I'll say for the rest of you, who seem so upset, live a little. Come with me to a futbol game sometime, or better yet, go by yourself, if you've been blessed like me to live your dreams. You may just love it! The chanting, the songs, the wild emotions. I bet you'd get caught up in it just like me. I used to hate soccer (so boring) and then got a little taste of the worlds sport in Argentina. It was with 60,000 screaming fans, and in a word AMAZING!!! As good as Neyland I can assure you, with a little more violence thrown in. The fans here are so passionate they have to put a wall between them and have them leave 30 minutes apart. And they still find ways to rough each other up. That's passion!

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Good night Volnation.

Sorry if I ruin your fun, but right now I'm wandering around South America, for a few weeks, and futbol or soccer is on 8 channels on my hotel cable. I was bumped up to first class on my flight down due to a cancelation and was set up next to a European/American sports merchandise executive, for a famous shoe company that the Vols have used in the past. He told me without a doubt that futbol or soccer is worth more in marketing and market share than all other sports in the WORLD combined, way, way more. When I asked him to compare the Super Bowl to the World Cup, he laughed! So even though my Spurs will always wander around fifth in the premier league, it really doesn't make sense what you're saying. Get out of the states a bit and see how often they televise our football or griders any where else in the world. It comes on at around 2am on Sunday on a channel nobody watches, if at all. While yesterday i saw a nation transfixed by a game between Sevilla and Real Madrid, and this is Ecuador, a nation six thousand miles away from Spain. This is not to say I love futbol more than football, I love our Vols! But wake up boys, reality is reality! Now Go Big Orange!

Lets not awaken any Muricans to the fact that the world doesn't revolve around us all of the time. As long as most of these guys have their Bud Light, Walmart and football, its all good.

You are talking to people trapped in the American matrix... we typically don't venture out any further than what we have been programmed to like here in the US.

Most Americans have a very narrow range of life experiences and usually are not open to new experiences, new ideas or new ways of viewing life. We just consume whatever the pop culture feeds us and we're content.

People that say Americans don't care about soccer paid no attention to how huge the World Cup ratings were here.

I'd agree that American football dominates in overall popularity here, but to say no one cares about it makes no sense. If America found a way to have a team in the Premier League, I'm sure it would be a fairly popular team here. I wish I had a team that I could feel some sort of tie to and cheer for in soccer.

I have a hard time seeing any other sport compete with football, however. Most exciting sport in the world in my opinion with one of the best atmospheres!

OK, I don't like soccer. I do like the Redskins nickname. I'm sick of hearing about gay football players. Does that about cover everything?

To say that because somebody says they don't like soccer they are racist is so unbelievably beyond the pale I have a hard time responding to such ridiculous comments. And if you think the only place where people don't care for soccer is in the south or Tennessee go ANYWHERE in the country and take a poll. We've got a long way to go indeed. You sir are a buffoon.

Soccer is probably the most popular sport in North west USA. If not, then it isn't too far behind.

His racism comments are stemming from the claim that this "this is America" and we don't like soccer

Sorry to ruin your fun, but this is America. Nobody cares about soccer. That is reality.

No, it isn't. It's your ignorant reality, so you just assume it's everyone else's as well.

And a preference for American football vs "rest of the world" football doesn't mean Americans don't care about soccer at all.

There's also a good chance you'll be eating your words in 25 years when traditional football is either banned or a shell of its former self due to lawsuits/deaths related to CTE and soccer is the dominant sport in the States.

Then why did 26.5 million Americans watch Germany and Argentina play?

Football is the king sport here, but to think "nobody cares" about soccer is absurd. It's a growing sport here. That is reality.

I coach a D1 travel team and do high school camps over the summer in several states. Travel a lot coaching soccer and Tennessee is for sure up there in soccer popularity.

FC Alliance out of Knoxville and TSC out of Nashville always have top 10 nationally ranked teams.

This is the same argument that was being used in the mid 70's when Kyle Rote Jr. turned down a D1 football scholarship to play soccer. If you've never heard of Kyle Rote Jr., that's my point.

The main reason soccer was popular in the 70s was because the greatest player of all time, Pele, played for the New York Cosmos. There were no soccer specific stadiums. Now there are 13 with 2 more being built.

Unless something drastic happens to football, like lawsuits or new rules completely changing the game, I don't know if soccer will ever pass it. But baseball will slip to 4th in 10-15 years.

You are taking what I said way too literally. Obviously I am aware that there are people who like soccer here in the states.
My point is that football is overwhelmingly king and it isn't even close.
And you having to say I may eat my words in about 25 years says it all. Get your panties out of that massive wad.

Because there was no football on.
Seriously though, as I said to the other Guy, I know that people in the states like soccer. Common sense. My point is that compared to football, it isn't close. That is the truth.

Just a little confusing IMO.

I agree it isn't close, but soccer is here to stay now and will only grow in popularity.

Frankly, it has nothing to do with race, it has everything to do with South American countries (and most everyone else too) are too poor to play American football. It simply costs a fortune for the equipment (as well as the food), while kids playing soccer require only a ball and a few sticks in the ground. And that is not to say that they couldnt afford it on a national level but the real expense is the full ecosystem, every high school, every college being able to afford all that equipment.

That is also one of the reasons that many American high schools are starting to go with soccer - its not because they somehow love the sport more or are becoming more worldly but a simple case of economics.

Good point on the economics part, that definetely plays a role. The main one though IMO, is that it's just been around longer than other sports. America is way behind there.

High school soccer will start fading in the years to come. It will become a school "club" like rugby is here and won't receive any school funding. Competitive travel teams are year round and the dedicated players stay because coaching is just better most of the time.

Its really not confusing. You're just taking things way too literally. It would be like someone saying "he's as fast as lightning " and taking that literally.
Clearly, there are some who care. I'm not an idiot. But compared to the following football has here, its practically nothing.
