Go Navy! My dad was assigned to the USS Topeka during the Cold War, and my nephew has about 5 years to retirement…he spent sea duty aboard the Iwo Jima and is currently stationed at Diego Garcia. My greatest regret was not doing the same…but I still have a large framed pic of the Reagan in my office!

Navy vet here; I was stationed at NAF Misawa 1984-1986. I worked on the tail end with the team that built and implemented Ripsaw Bombing Range and then operated the range working with JASDF. I was there when Col. Ryan was the CO of the new 432nd fighter wing {F16s} and Capt. Evans was our skipper at NAF Misawa. Small world, eh?

I was there 86-89 up on Security Hill

Funny picture, especially with the low bridge behind it. Jimmy Haslam's new yacht?

Strange story but confirmed true to me by a friend who ended up serving as Navigator on the ship. It still doesn't really pass the BS test. If it's a lie I'm glad he didn't make Admiral, but here goes. When I got to the Bay Area for my fleet squadron tour the Enterprise was still home-ported at NAS Alameda (Oakland) which meant she had to pass under the Golden Gate Bridge. It seems that they had added some antennas on the superstructure and they were a foot or two too high for it to pass under the bridge clean. So when they would clear under the Bay Bridge they would increase speed and aim the bow at the north end of the GG Bridge, as they approached the Bridge the helmsman would go full left rudder and the turn would cause the antennae to dip under.

Of course current super-carriers could never pass under now and there are no active military bases in the Bay Area today (there were four when I was there).

Most definitely. I graduated basic in that same drill hall June 1999. Would’ve loved to have heard Rocky Top, but at the time, everyone was singing DMX songs. Lol
