Ewers vs. Nico (Slow Day Thread)

Campbell played horribly this year at right tackle and was replaced by Davis every game this year. There were only two guys that played well both in’22 and’24. You can argue all you want but since the coaches aren’t looking for a quarterback in the portal and they are looking for linemen and receivers, I think they agree with me.

Nico is better than Ewers was at the same point in his career.

People seem to forget that Ewers was considered a bit of a "bust" his Freshman and Sophomore seasons. Didn't really "get good" till he was a 3rd year player. Ewers is good, but don't feel like he's elite. In fact, I'm not so sure that Arch Manning isn't better than Ewers right now.

We need to get better pass protection for Nico - that's what I'm concerned about.

A lot of people are missing a key point in this Debate: it is not whether Nico will have better overall career than Ewers but rather can a 5th year, experienced and proven Ewers gives a team better chance than high-potential but not proven Nico in 2026 ?
If Nico is good, he is gone next year anyways so there is no ‘long term’ aspect. Also since he already shopped around, UT would be just to shop around as well.
Anyways, its not happening. We will just have to watch him in GA uniform in Neyland next year !!

Ewers is good but nothing about his game is elite. I doubt he would be the difference maker for a team trying to get a championship. If he was elite, he would be going to the NFL this year when there are few good QBs going into the draft.

Sark has done a good job in surrounding him with talent. It’s almost like an old Saban team from 2010-2016 where you could plug any QB in in there and they would be competing for championships.

If Tenn was a straight drop back passing team...maybe. Heupel likes the threat of a running QB plus when you line up as wide as TN, having a QB with the ability to beat a free blitzer with his legs is also needed. Nico, even though not as accomplished as a passer is a much better fit for Heupel's system than Ewers.

Ewers has a better supporting cast than Nico and to be honest his coach is a more creative play caller. I’ll take Nico all day, every day. I have never seen anything spectacular or out of the ordinary from Ewers where he wins games by himself

So a lot of major schools are throwing 6-7 Mill at Ewers apparently to contend for championship. Since its a slow day, why not the Vols ? I know it wont happen but for the sake of fun message board discussion hear me out:

a) Chances of Ewers having a better next season than Nico are much higher : older, more experienced, proven etc

b) If Nico has Ewers type season, he is most likely gone after next year anyways. So both are one year guys in good scenario. If Nico has average to bad season, he will be s liability for 2026 anyways.

c) The loyalty and team bond aspect is gone anyways. Ohio State recruits 5* QB every year and gets a transfer QB to compete. Further loyalty can’t be one sided. If Nico entertained Oregon and others for more money, why not UT for better QB ?

Ewers would transform UT into instant contender. Sadly I doubt he would come or our program would even pursue him.
For Nico to leave, he needs to be a consensus top 15 pick..... He ain't doing that in one season

My husband is a Longhorn and he would say, yes, please take Ewers! Ewers will be gone next year because theyve got to get Arch playing full time. Ewers surrounding talent is the difference maker. As far as Sark is concerned, he went conservative several times this year during games to get by, just as Heup did. Altho the talent Texas has, certainly allowed Sark to be more open in play calling.

Salvageable? Really?

Nico threw for 2900 yards, 22, touchdowns, and 4 interceptions, and we're calling Nico salvageable?

Oh wait - I lied. That wasn't Nico Iamaleava. That was this guy - as a sophomore.

Nico only threw for ... 2600 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. That's much worse. He's clearly a scrub. What could I possibly be thinking?

Paint the full picture if you're going to use both of these.

Those stats for Peyton are only the 11 regular season games, but Nico's include 12 regular season games PLUS a playoff game. So Peyton through more TDs and had 300 more yards in 2 fewer games.

Peyton only had 2 games with 0 TDs, Nico had 4. Peyton had 2 games under 200 yards passing, Nico had 8.

You don’t pay 6 million~ for a guy that is a small to medium upgrade when you have a young QB that is salvageable. You take that money and go sure up other holes.. I.e. WR, IOL, S, etc.
Texas would have been in the final four if they had played Manning instead of Ewers. Most of hi long throws are soft nd short of the receivers and are well defended or intercepted. Manning is the better QB of the two and should have been starting most of the year. Nico is his equal now and will be better next this Fall. I would not trade Nico for him.

Nico would transfer if this happened
