Well, aside form the fact that they are totally different issues and present totally different problems in context, let me ask you -- why did the church even bother to ask for the permit?

Because they knew it would be denied -- its about being as antagonistic as they can, and getting as much publicity for it as they can.

If a church applied for a permit to burn American flags, it would not surprise me in the least that the local commission would deny it for the same hazard reason that the city did here.

had to get a burn permit. Don't want some lawyers to go after them on a technicality

I agree but I believe they have the right protected by our constitution to do as they wish.

For the record the statement in bold applies equally to the Mosque being proposed as well.

you can burn a bible, or an American flag, LG defends it as freedome of speech, but when you burn a koran, then he's all over the Christians. such the hypocrite.

Freedom of speech should allow the burning of a Koran. Is it stupid? Incredibly so, but freedom doesn't always go the way you want it to. Just like the Mosque in New York.

I would be very disappointed if my church was involved in this, so I will not support it. Not the message my Jesus wants me to spread

The difference is fairly stark in my mind. Burning the flag is insensitive and cruel in the eyes of a lot of Americans, particularly those who served in the Armed forces. Burning a religious treatise that is the foundation of a religion of a billion people -- who we are trying to dissuade from joining the lunatic radical fringe of their religion -- is just plain dumb.

Maybe so, but there are probably Americans driven further right every time they see a flag burner.

I don't want people around the world seeing images of Americans burning the Koran, but if it's freedom of speech, I don't really know how to tell them it's not okay.

i disagree that they should burn the koran, but your reasoning that the muslim world will stop trying to kill if we're nice to them is purly naive. they only they'll stop if we become muslims.

it is amazing the hatred you have for conservatism and Christianity, that you'll defend a religious group, (or anyone for that matter) who is hell bent on destroying America.

Book burning puts ignorance on display for all to see. I don't care who is doing it. That being said, I'm with PJ. If they want to burn them, they have the right to do it.
