Exactly what we don't need

So LG is saying things that are 'offensive' should not happen? Is he now arguing for honoring the sensitivities of others?

Book burning puts ignorance on display for all to see. I don't care who is doing it. That being said, I'm with PJ. If they want to burn them, they have the right to do it.

Agreed and the majority of people will call them moronic bigots for burning it and the world will see what freedom means.

What a terrible message...

As long as no one objects to a bible burning nearby.

No one objects to the right to burn a bible or no one objects that a bible is being burned? Huge difference.

I object to some one burning the Koran or Bible or flag even but I certainly support their right to do so. Just as I support my right to ridicule them.

At least the City won't give them the permit for it.

Just a terrible image to display to the world. It is incredibly stupid and counterproductive to do this. Hope the Spirit intervenes and moves them to give up on it.

Koran burning: Florida church that wanted to burn Islamic holy text on 9/11 denied burn permit - OrlandoSentinel.com

IOW's you only support the 1st Amendment when it comes to offensive speech by Muslims, gays, radical environmentalists, feminists, Rev Wright, etc... Am I reading you correctly?

The very same logic that says the Muslims have a RIGHT to build that mosque regardless of how offensive it might be guarantees these folks the right to burn the Koran. There is no credible judge left or right that will allow this ruling to stand. It is a clear violation of the 1st Amendment.

The church should be able to do what they want.

That said....it's pretty stupid to do.

I think to get around the permit, they need to just publicly rip pages out of the Koran and wipe themselves with it. If anyone objects, call it "art". Problem solved.

Well, aside form the fact that they are totally different issues and present totally different problems in context, let me ask you -- why did the church even bother to ask for the permit?

Because they knew it would be denied -- its about being as antagonistic as they can, and getting as much publicity for it as they can.

If a church applied for a permit to burn American flags, it would not surprise me in the least that the local commission would deny it for the same hazard reason that the city did here.

They are both 1st Amendment issues.
