Expectations For CJH Post Media Days

I am curious about the general undertones regarding Vol fan expectations for Heupel. I saw his speech at Media day, and he seemed to be in good spirits. Year 4 has typically been a sliding doors moment for each of our head coaches (for better or worse). The fan base either completely gets behind you after year 4, or completely turns on you at this juncture in a man’s tenure. It is what it is. Do you expect 9 wins? 95 percent of fans are still in on him as the captain of the ship, but what would it take to substantially shift those numbers? In my opinion, If he went for 7 wins—I think the fans would flip on him. 8 wins and I think it’s a controversy. 9 wins and I think he’s safe. What say you? Agree or disagree?

My personal expectation for this program and coaching staff is that we, at a minimum, will make the 12-team playoff every year moving forward. If we don’t, there’s a problem.

Okay so if the following hypothetical situation occurs (I don’t care if you do or don’t think it will happen or not):

Chatt:Win
NCST:Loss
KSU:Win
OU:Loss
Arky:Loss
UF:Loss
Bama:Loss
UK:Loss
Miss St:Win
UGA:Loss
UTEP:Win
Vandy:Win

You honestly think that people are going to want to keep him based on ‘22? It’s been a pretty good run for Heupel, but he hasn’t been perfect. If the above plausible scenario occurs, fans will completely turn on him in my opinion.
This will literally never happen so....

Loss to UK?
Army?
NCST?

No.

It makes no sense to discuss scenarios like having 7 losses that WILL NOT happen. Why even bring it up? The only way something like that happens is if a couple of key players like Nico & Sampson go down early in the season and their backups totally fail. Even then, the fans would understand and not turn on CJH.

Nailed it.
I think most fans realize we have the coach that will keep us at the top.

We have some seriously mental people on here that should probably check themselves into a facility and get real help. We are coming off one of the best athletic seasons in the university’s history, namely just winning the College World Series. Get that Battered Vol Syndrome BS out of here. And the great part is we are still trending in an upward trajectory. The sky is the limit for all of our athletics. If you haven’t hopped on after this run of exceptional sports seasons then idk what to tell you. Go cheer on another team if you don’t think Tennessee will succeed. As the great Tony Vitello said, “It’s about UNITY.”

I think Heupel is doing a great job. Only red flags are games like 22 SC and 23 Missouri/FLA. Those games should have been won. If it happens in 24 (lose to somebody we shouldn't) then it's a trend.
There are only a handful of programs on annual basis that don’t lose to inferior opponents. It’s sports, losses happen. It’s how your team responds to those losses.

Totally disagree. In the past, when UT fans turned on their coach in year 4, it wa because he was a total jerk and a loser. Not one of the year 4 coaches that crapped the bed won 11 games, beat Saban, or won their bowl game. Way too many firsts to name in that famed season. IMO, the 22 season bought him 5 years minimum. Heck, half the fan base loved butch until halfway thru the 16 season was over. It wasn't nearly the majority of the fanbase until midway through his 5th season, when he essentially left UT no choice but to move on by going 0-fer in the SEC.

If for some reason Heup has a bad season in year 4, some will inevitably turn, citing the old VN favorite"told ya so" that is a lifelong tradition of this message board, but even then it will not the entire fanbase.

If he craps the bed again in 25 with Nico as a RS Soph in his 3rd year in the program, then a large majority will turn on him but there will still be some talking about the 22 season.

I think it would take 3 really bad seasons in a row at this point to get the entire fanbase turned against him.
If he has two bad seasons in a row he won’t get a **** at a third. 0% chance of him getting that much of a leash, but also 0% chance of him having 2 bad seasons in a row. We’re going 11-1. LFG.

He's put up one win against Bama so far ... a good thing. He's got to prove at some point Kirby's UGA is not an automatic loss like the dawgs think we are. We cannot have a coach on The Hill that has a school he cannot beat. I like CJH, think he has things going in the right direction, but he needs a W against UGA sooner rather than later to get my long term support.

Anyone remember the beginning of Pruitt’s second season?

I say if we don’t have a ‘22 esk season this one or next year, CJH will be on fire, or rather is coaching seat.

The Heup is going to have his ups and downs. The SEC is a killer conference, nobody is 100% safe season after season. Even Vanderbilt has blind squirrel finds nut games. And the conference has just become lethal to anyone who enters a game without a kill or be killed 'tude. You need to have a coach with Sabanitis. That is one who by luck or crook replaces departing assistance coaches that are perfect or hear perfect fits. And do it consistently. Now, more than ever, in winning seasons, there is so much that can right, and just as much that can go wrong, year in and year out. If Tennessee has an iota of sense, we will exercise patience and not jump the gun the moment a coach's team doesn't exhibit a manifest destiny season or two.

[Odd Note: I liked Butch, but never felt he would bring us a championship. I looked at him as being scared. You see, he seemed to be trying too hard to be liked. In hindsight, I can now say I understand why. In his fear, he opted to stay with what he knew. That being his so-called spread offense. He was either too dense, or too stubborn, if not stupid, to see SEC coaches had already adjusted to it. Thus, he was seeing less and less success with it. As a matter-of-fact, this rigidity is why Fulmer's star paled, too, once he could no longer out-talent other coaches.]

The Heup, I think he is smart enough to not have Lyle Lump handedness. All fans need to do is not jump the gun at the slightest excuse. We finally have the right kind of coach. Don't throw him away just because you can.

I think you're asking way too much of SOME of our fans ...just sayn.

I expect us to have a chance to win every game we play this year. And I expect to not have any team in America that is clearly better than us and that we shouldn't expect to beat.
