It's unfortunate for this guy that this particular person stalked him. Because of this person, he's going to a sinking ship instead of a rising SEC west power.

Cannot blame the kid. I do not think VN fits in the category. Sure, they can come on here and see some pretty crazy stuff but we are not actively pursuing them on their own personal boards. That crossed the line when you enter their environment and attack them.

I think it just depends on the recruit's thoughts about fan bases. He could be creeped out that there are 100 page threads analyzing every one of his statements. Or he could be excited to see so much support for a certain team. I know Couch has referenced VN and talked about it glowingly.

No fan needs to comment that stuff on a FB or on twitter and its just weird to be friends with a recruit.

Really sad that grown adults would send these guys messages on Facebook unsolicited. Especially ones if this nature

One of the comments made an interesting point. Some of the stuff said on the field is alot worse than the comments he received on facebook. I'm not making excuses for the comments as it is kind of sad that people do this. I have been an advocate for Online etiquette education for a while. Kids should be educated from an early age about what is right and wrong online.

Really is sad and its like being a stalker. What recruit would would want to go to a school when its fans are like that?

Facebook and the rest of the 'social media' sites are what they are. Fans are idiots, that is not in question, but the notion that it should be incumbent upon these sites to increase privacy because a kid plays high school football and has scholarship offers is asinine. Kids are more than welcome to do what Johnson did and leave the sites, or take their own measures.

If we want to treat these kids (and they want to be treated) like professionals at 16, 17, 18 years old, they can learn to deal with the pressure, scrutiny, and BS that comes with that. It's not the website's responsibility to baby a recruit.

End rant/

The kid could've taken steps to ignore the irate fans. However, why do people "friend" prospects? It's sick. It's either jock-sniffing that has gotten out of hand or just plain creepy to be "friending" 17-18 year old kids... especially if you're like over the age of 20...

The UT Athletics department put out a statement about fans contacting recruits on Facebook and Twitter today.
