Fair to say UGA football program so elite since its the only sport the school place emphasis on?

It's fair to say that football is the only sport they place emphasis on since ...

They have what is easily the highest football recruiting budget in the country ....

Georgia's rise to football title aided by unmatched recruiting budget

.... while their basketball arena is falling apart ....

Georgia's Stegeman Coliseum closed after ceiling piece falls

How can Michael White convince a high school basketball recruit that the University of Georgia cares anything at all about his sport, considering this?

I mean if focusing everything on football was a full proof solution, hell I would say UT should go for it.

Simple reality is football provides 75% plus of your budget anyway.

Problem being, UGA has always focused pretty much on football but the results haven't always been there.

Like it or not they got a coach that keeps the talent bed home
That brings up a point that I don't understand ... Why does a program in such a talent rich state, have to allocate so much money for their recruiting budget? They spend about $3 million more than Alabama, who is 2nd ... and $5 million more than Tennessee who is 3rd.

Because they’re a national brand. Yes, they could win most games with the talent in state but to continue to run they’re on they’ve got to recruit nationally.

... but $3 million more than the next highest recruiting budget in the country? It's extreme.

I wouldn't put it that way. I'd say the reason they aren't elite at all sports is because they really don't care about anything besides football. UGA really should be a school more in the mold of LSU, where football is clearly #1 but they also care about (and fund) other sports.

In the modern era, UGA should also be really good at basketball and baseball. They aren't largely because I don't think they care about them. And they aren't even as dominant historically at football as they probably should be.

Completely agree. UGA has produced some absolute studs that were terrific in college and many of those players went on to have dominant pro careers. The 40 year drought was kind of mind boggling.

UGA people will point to the Jan Kemp scandal as a reason for that. I can buy that as a reason Dooley didn't win another title, but not for much else. And let's be real - they should have been better than they were pre-1980 too.

Honestly, their longtime mediocrity (or just downright bad play) in basketball and especially baseball is way more baffling. They've been really good at football for a while. Do they have as many titles as they should - probably not - but they've been really good. But they suck at basketball. Baseball isn't as bad as basketball, but you look at the historical performance and go "That's it?" It's wild given the talent base there in that sport. UGA, honestly, should be one of the best programs in college baseball history. They should be up there with a Texas, LSU, Arizona, etc. I just don't think they care, which is a lame excuse because there are other clear football schools that are also great at basketball and/or baseball.

Since White was hired by UGA immediately after being fired by their rival UF, I'd say that speaks more to recruits about UGAs commitment to hoops than anything else including an outdated arena with a leaking roof.

I don't think that's how that went down, was it? I'm not a huge basketball fan but I thought Mike White was just sort of on the hot seat at Florida and left.

Some of Dooley players couldn’t read.

Georgia has been consistently good since 2000 yea they struggled in the 90’s and we took advantage I doubt we see that happen again anytime soon. Georgia last missed a bowl game way back in 1996 there last losing season was in 2010 so only two losing seasons in 27 years that’s pretty remarkable they just couldn’t get over the national title hump until Kirby finally did it. Georgia and Ohio St and Oklahoma are the three top winningest programs win percentage wise since 2000. Georgia fans need to give Mark Richt more credit for turning that program back into a elite one and keeping Tennessee and other schools from raiding all the best Georgia instate talent.

Because everyone else in the country is trying to recruit their instate talent too.

They just hired the Louisiana State University pitching coach as their new head baseball coach for pennies on the dollar.
